10 Die, 60 Injured As Church Roof Collapses During Mass In Mexico
10 people have been reported dead while 60 people were injured after the roof of a church collapsed in northern Mexico during a Sunday mass.
Police said it may likely have been caused by ‘a structural failure’.
‘We join in prayer at the tragic loss of life and those injured’ the Mexican Council of Bishops submitted in a statement issued on Sunday.
Bishop José Armando Alvarez of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tampico said the roof caved in while parishioners were receiving communion at the Santa Cruz church in the Gulf coast city of Ciudad Madero, next to the port city of Tampico.
A four-month-old baby, three five-year-olds and two nine-year-olds were later listed among the victims.
Three children were among those who died, and the police have said that this may have been due to the fact that baptisms were expected to take place at the church.
Team@orientactualmags.com learned that first responders are looking for survivors and other victims as about 30 parishioners were believed to have been trapped and efforts are being made to get them pulled from the rubble.
The Tamaulipas state police said about 100 people were in the church at the time of the collapse.
This had come barely 24 hours after 10 Cuban migrants who were hiding in a cargo truck died in a tragic accident in the country.
The vehicle had overturned on a highway in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas.
The accident took place near the Guatemalan border and at least 17 others were injured, and local officials had noted that one of the victims is a child-Team@orientactualmags.com
