2 Lawmakers Walk Out Angrily As Oyo Assembly Finally Okays ‘Rotational Headship’ For Council Of Obas

Oyo State House of Assembly on Tuesday took a definitive decision on the ‘controversial’ Council of Obas and Chiefs (Further Amendments) Bill, 2025, and okayed ‘rotational headship’ for the state Council of Obas and Chiefs.

The ‘chairmanship’ of the Council of Obas and Chiefs will be done in rotation and the three monarchs who will enjoy such a privilege are the Alaafin of Oyo, Olubadan of Ibadanland and the Soun of Ogbomosoland.

Team@orientactualmags.com learned that the bill was passed during the plenary session held on Tuesday following the presentation of the report of the Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters by its Vice Chairman, Hon Bamidele Adeola.

‘The Chairmanship position should be done in rotation by the Alaafin of Oyo, the Olubadan of Ibadanland and the Soun of Ogbomosoland’ the committee submitted.

The House has also approved the appointment of the 13 Chairmen of the Council, including the Otun and Osi Olubadan of Ibadanland.

It was learned that the decision taken by the House of Assembly did not go down well with two lawmakers from Oyo East and Atiba state constituencies, Hon Olorunpoto Rahman and Hon Gbenga Oyekola Atiba constituency, respectively , who  walked out angrily while the lawmakers were deliberating on the recommendations made by the committee

‘We should be guided by the truth on whatever law that we make. Everyone knows the position of Alaafin. We are not out of touch with the history.

Alaafin is a paramount ruler. We should not make laws for political convenience. We should make a law that can stand the test of time. We should make a law that will align with history.

We are not satisfied with the process that the committee worked through. There was neither a public hearing nor a stakeholder engagement.

There was no instance where they invited anyone from Oyo to come and speak to this bill. I have serious issues with that’ Hon Rahman later told reporters.

Recall that traditional leaders and stakeholders in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, and Ogbomoso including  Mogajis, Baales, monarchs, the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, the Ibadan Compounds Peace Initiative, and Mogajis from the Soun Ruling Houses of Ogbomoso had on Monday spoken in opposition against the idea of making the Alaafin of Oyo the Permanent Chairman of the Council of Obas and Chiefs-Team@orientactualmags.com  Do you have any information you wish to share with us?
