20-Year-Old Unilorin Student Lends Boyfriend  Her Mother’s N500,000 , Commits Suicide After Realizing She Has Been Swindled

Sanni Hameedat ,  a   300- Level student at the Department of Microbiology, University of Ilorin,  has embarked on a voluntary trip to the great beyond.

20-year-old Sanni Hameedat, reportedly committed suicide after  realizing that a guy whose identity is yet to be established had tricked her into parting with  N500,000.

Though all the students were expected to have left hostels that are located on campus and only return after resumption of academic activities, Hameedat was however still living on campus because she stays in a private hostel.

Only international students and those who stay in private hostels are allowed to live on campus when the university is officially closed.

‘The cause of  the suicide was traced to financial misappropriation. She was entrusted with a significant sum of money by her mother. She met a guy on Snapchat and they became friends.

When the boy claimed that his mother was battling breast cancer and urgently needed N500,000, the compassionate and emotional lady decided to help him by lending him half of the N1 million  her mother kept with her and the boy promised to repay the money.

However, when her mother needed the money back, the boy made himself unavailable and blocked her number. This left her deeply troubled and for her to raise the  N500,000, she resorted to borrowing money from various apps’ the management of the private hostel, Rubiks, submitted in a statement on Wednesday.

Team@orientactualmags.com learned that Hameedat, who   died from pesticide ingestion, was rushed to  the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, where she was pronounced a Brought in Dead patient.

The deceased student’s  roommate , who had retired to bed early, woke up in the middle of the night to discover that Hameedah was  in distress , foaming from her mouth and also vomiting.

‘The Vice-Chancellor, Dean of Student Affairs are very much aware of the issue, and they have reported to the appropriate authority to begin a full-length investigation into the matter. It is sad that the university community lost her in such a devastating manner’  President of the Students’ Union , Ologundudu Adesunkanmi, popularly called Royal Prince,  was quoted to have submitted.

‘She had threatened to commit suicide since last week when operators of the loan apps resorted to sending demeaning text messages to her, her friends and relations, and also her parents.

She was first enmeshed in debt around April 2023, when she was said to have outstanding loans from the apps in the region of N270,000. At that point, her parents and siblings had gotten involved with the siblings paying up  her debt even without the knowledge of her parents.

Hameedah reportedly told her dad then, that she had borrowed the money to stake in online sport betting apps and that she lost all the money.

Recently again, it was discovered that the late Hameedah could not account for a sum of money said to be over N400,000 kept in her care by her mother. Hameedah had said she lent a friend the money, saying his mother is being treated for cancer at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, Osun State.

Following this assertion, her family asked for the identity of the borrower, a request to which she replied that she had lost his contacts  and that the guy  had since disappeared into thin air.

On Sunday, her siblings were said to have asked her to produce the transaction receipt to show that she  transferred  the money to the guy, a request she hadn’t conveniently responded to until  her death’ another source said.

The University of llorin in a statement issued on Wednesday by the  Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, has offered condolences to the parents, siblings, friends and colleagues of the deceased student  and prayed that God gives them the fortitude to bear the loss.

The university also  urged students  to be wary of the company they keep in order not to fall into the traps of scammers.

‘The University of llorin is reputed to be a bastion of moral and academic education and we are surprised that any of our students, upon all the moral and academic instructions inculcated in them, could have associated with such undesirable element of a supposed boyfriend, and even went ahead to take the extreme step of taking her own life’ the statement said-Team@orientactualmags.com
