Nigerian Musician Sues BBC For Copyright Infringement, Demands N120m Compensation

A Kano- based Hausa musician, Abdul Kamal, has initiated a lawsuit against the BBC Hausa Service, citing copyright infringement.

 Team@orientactualmags.com learned that he has accused the BBC Hausa Service  of  using his soundtrack in a popular programme ‘Daga Bakin Mai Ita’ without his consent.

Counsel for the plaintiff, Barrister Bashir Ibrahim Umar told the court that the use of his client’s soundtrack without his consent by the BBC will diminish his future music career.

‘As an upcoming musician, this will destroy his music career as some people may think he (my client) is using the BBC’s soundtrack for cheap popularity.

We want the court to make the BBC to pay him the sum of N120m as damages’ he said.

Barrister Bashir also urged the court to restrain the defendant from continued use of the soundtrack pending final determination of the case by the court.

  BBC’s counsel,  Barrister Shakirudden Mosobalage  however told the court that his client bought the soundtrack from a company in Abuja and asked the court to give him a little time in order to present some documents to support his line of argument.

His plea was later granted by the court while the Presiding judge, Justice N.M. Inusa adjourned the case  until 12th December, 2023, for further mention-Team@orientactualmags.com
