Kwara: Medical Experts Recommend Healthy Eating To Prevent Prostate Cancer, Menopause Pain

Medical experts have submitted that a healthy eating and regular exercise can help in preventing prostate cancer among men and other diseases while also helping to address the issue of menopause pain among the women.

The medical experts ; Dr. Lola Owolabi, Dr. Ismail Husseni , who are consultants at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital,  Ilorin ,and Dr. Aremu Isiaq, a senior consultant surgeon at the General Hospital, Ilorin, spoke during the ‘Health Talk’ programme organized by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Kwara state council in Ilorin on Monday.

Team@orientactualmags.com learned that this was organized as part of the activities marking the chapel’s 2023 Press Week.

The medical experts  also talked about  managing menopause and prostate enlargement.

Dr. Owolabi  listed pains in women at the age of menopause to include weak bones, vaginal dryness that may cause painful sexual intercourse, mood changes, loss of air and depletion of hormones.

Others are slow digestion, loss of voice, profuse sweating, pubic hair fall off and loss of elasticity of urinary bladder as well as uterus collapse.

Owolabi however said a  healthy eating with less carbohydrates, light clothings, frequent cold rather than hot baths, water-based lubricants and hormone replacement therapy that must not be used beyond five years will help in this respect.

The gynecologist consultant also corrected the misinformation that irregular sex induces early menopause which she described as an ageing process among women.

‘It is the absence of eggs that prompts normal and regular menopause, it has nothing to do with sex’ she asserted.

She also recommended healthy protein sources , less strenuous exercises and intake of Vitamin-E medications to reduce cases of falling hairs.

On prostate enlargement, Dr. Ismail Husseni, a Urology consultant , described prostate among men as a normal phenomenon, ‘as long as you are not castrated, you must have it’ he noted.

He, however, warned against  naivety, poor management and control.

He linked its spread and dangerous poise to irregular and uncontrolled eating .

‘There is no major treatment for prostate cancer, it varies’ he submitted while  adding that its severity lies with the risk factors.

Husseni , who noted that lifestyle modification could check or reduce the menace, said: ‘Lifestyle modification is the key to prostate cancer-free life among men.

The risk factors apart from alcohol and smoking is uncontrolled eating . Do away with diary foods like animal fats and red meats and go for white meats like rabbit, chicken and turkey’ he said.

He also advised men to engage in regular exercise and screening especially for those above 40 years.

‘Avoid misinformation, prostate cancer is not contagious’ he declared-Team@orientactualmags.com
