Queen Margrethe Discloses Decision To Vacate Throne This Month, Announces Son As New Denmark Monarch

The Queen of Denmark, Margrethe II , has announced that she will be vacating the throne on January 14.

Born in 1940 to Denmark’s former monarch, King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid, 83-year-old Margrethe said the back surgery she underwent last year led to ‘thoughts about the future’ and when to vacate the throne ‘I have decided that now is the right time’  she submitted in her speech.

Margrethe , who was a member of a Danish women’s air force unit as a princess,  has spent 52 years on the throne.

Denmark has Europe’s oldest ruling monarchy, which traces its line back to the Viking king Gorm the Old, who died in 958. Although Magrethe is head of state, the Danish Constitution strictly ruled out her involvement in party politics.

Margrethe became heir to her father in 1953 at the age of 31, after a constitutional amendment had allowed women to inherit the throne.

In 1967, she married French diplomat Henri de Laborde de Monpezat, who served as her royal consort until his death in 2018.

 Her eldest son, Crown Prince Frederick, will  be taking over from her on January 14 .

‘I have decided that now is the right time. On 14 January 2024 – 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father – I will step down as queen of Denmark.

I leave the throne to my son, Crown Prince Frederik’  she said.

Team@orientactualmags.com learned that Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has thanked the queen for her life-long dedication to duty.

‘It is still difficult to understand that the time has now come for a change of throne’ Mette said-

‘In the new year, Crown Prince Frederik will be proclaimed king. Crown Princess Mary will become queen. The kingdom will have a new regent and a new royal couple.  We can look forward to all of this in the knowledge that they are ready for the responsibility and the task’ the Prime Minister added- Team@orientactualmags.com
