Zamfara Guber Election: Supreme Court Upholds Gov Dauda Lawal ’s Victory
The Supreme Court has upheld the victory of Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara state in the election that was held in the state last year.
Team@orientactualmags.com learned that the apex court vacated the November 16, 2023, judgment of the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal, which had declared the governorship election in question inconclusive.
The Supreme Court ruled that Lawal, who was the PDP candidate , secured the majority of lawful votes and was rightly declared winner of the gubernatorialelection by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
In the lead judgment that was delivered by Justice Emmanuel Agim, the apex court, described the verdict of the appellate court as ‘perverse’ while upholding the decision of the Zamfara state Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal that had affirmed Lawal’s victory.
Recall that INEC had declared Governor Lawal winner of the election after getting a total of 377,726 votes while the immediate past governor of the state and current Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle had gotten 311,976 votes.
The Zamfara state Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal had on September 18, 2023, ruled that Matawalle, who was the APC candidate , had failed to prove his allegations that election results of some polling stations were excluded by the electoral umpire.
The court of appeal had however overruled the tribunal and declared the Zamfara state governorship election as inconclusive-Team@orientactualmags.com
