‘On Rugbo Bo o’ All Eyes On Lamido Sanusi As Group Asks Parliament To Relook Kano Emirate Issues
A group, the Yan Dangwalen Jihar Kano (the Kano Electorate), has sent a letter to the Kano state House of Assembly, seeking a review of the bill establishing Gaya, Rano, Karaye, and Bichi emirate councils which was signed into law by former governor Abdullahi Ganduje, who is currently the APC National Chairman.
Team@orientactualmags.com learned that the group has also demanded that the former Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II should be restored to the throne.
In the said letter which was dated February 5, 2024, the group which had the Kano state governor, Deputy Governor and Secretary to the State Government cc’d , argued that the dissolution of the emirates in question will foster unity, peace, and stability within Kano state and its neighbouring communities
‘We write to plead and also draw the attention of the honorable members to the law that governs the additional emirs in Kano state. Specifically, we would like to request a review and potential dissolution of the additional emirs and section that led to the creation of the four additional emirates.
It is our firm belief that consolidating the emirates into a single entity will lead to greater unity and progress for the people of Kano. This consolidation may serve to streamline governance and promote a more cohesive community for the betterment of all citizens.
We acknowledge the rightful authority of the Kano state House of Assembly in the issue of emirate management. However, we humbly request your esteemed Assembly to revisit and reconsider the decision to remove HRH Sanusi Lamido Sanusi from his throne. Our belief is based on the belief that his reinstatement will foster unity, peace, and stability within Kano state and its neighbouring communities’.
While describing Sanusi as ‘a highly respected and influential figure who has demonstrated his commitment to the well-being of the people of Kano State throughout his tenure as Emir’, the group added that it would be in the overall interest of Kano to restore him to the throne.
‘During his time in office, he worked tirelessly to promote social and economic development, education, health care, and improved living standards for the citizens of Kano State.
Removing HRH Sanusi Lamido Sanusi from his throne has caused division and unrest among the people of Kano state, creating unnecessary tension within the community.
We humbly urge the esteemed members of the Assembly to consider this matter in the interest of the progress and unity of Kano state. Your thoughtful consideration of this issue will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the future of our community. We hope our plea will be honorably considered as an important matter and look forward to the positive outcomes that can arise from this crucial review’ the group said.
Publicity Secretary of Kano state APC, Alhaji Ahmad Aruwa, has however called the line of argument presented by the group a fairy tale.
‘The APC considers the gimmick as a fairy tale. How can a group or politicians protest or tell the government to dissolve the emirates?
The former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje administration had achieved a lot including the creation of the new emirates.
The APC, as a party, is not bothered because the state government under the former Governor Ganduje has done what it was supposed to do by creating the emirates and people have seen their importance.
Traditional institutions are supposed to be respected and the group didn’t complain or protest when the emirates were created’ he said.
Kano state NNPP Chairman, Alhaji Hashimu Dungurawa, in his reaction submitted that ‘’everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. So, the group is entitled to its opinion’.
In a counter move, a group, the Society for Peace Development and Education has urged the lawmakers to jettison the calls for the dissolution of the four emirates and reinstatement of the former emir submitting that this would do no good to the people of the state but create more chaos.
The group in the letter sent to the house of assembly which was signed by Secretary General, Mùrtala Musa Lisa, and titled ‘Re’’-joinder: Request to dissolve Emirs of Kano State and reinstate HRH San’si Lamido Sanusi’ argued that the emirates in question were in existence before being merged by the colonial masters.
Recall that Alhaji Ganduje had in his eight years as governor did a lot of things that influenced the course of history especially when it comes to chieftaincy matters.
Recall also that in 2019, the House of Assembly had approved the creation of four additional emirate councils, bringing the number of First-Class Emirs in the state to five.
The new councils are Gaya; Karaye, Rano, Bichi and the old Kano Emirate Council.
Apart from creating new emirate councils, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, a former governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, was also removed as Emir of Kano in March 2020 .Kano state House of Assembly had also earlier passed the Kano Emirate Council Amendment Bill, 2019 into Law during the plenary session presided over by Speaker Hamisu Ibrahim Chidari -Team@orientactualmags.com
