Abimbola Ajayi: Ilaro Poly Denies Medical Negligence Allegations, Says It’s Abortion –Related Death

Abimbola Ajayi: Ilaro Poly Denies Medical Negligence Allegations, Says It’s Abortion –Related Death

The  Federal Polytechnic Ilaro, Ogun state, has described as untrue the allegations of medical negligence raised in respect of the death of a student at the institution, Abimbola Ajayi.

She was until her death this week an HND 1 student at the Department of Leisure and Tourism.

Recall that it was alleged that Ajayi’s death was due to medical negligence with an accusing finger pointed at staff of the school clinic who had reportedly insisted on seeing her student identity and medical cards before attending to her.

The Sports Director, National Association of Nigeria Students, Southwest, Bameke Solomon, who is also an HND II student at the Department of  Quantity Survey , had alleged  that the  health workers  did not attend to the  deceased student until about 20 minutes after she had been rushed there for medical attention.

‘At about 2 pm on Wednesday, an HND I student, Abimbola Ajayi, was rushed from the department’s kitchen where they were having practical exams. She complained of stomach ache and became very weak and was rushed to the school clinic.

Instead of attending to her immediately, the medical staff insisted on seeing her student ID and medical cards. This was on for like 20 minutes after which they later attended to her but transferred her to another hospital outside the campus where she was declared as a brought in dead patient’ Bameke said.

Team@orientactualmags.com learned that the institution has however in a statement issued by  Deputy Registrar, Public Relations, Mr Sola Abiala, denied the medical negligence allegations explaining  that the medical report obtained from the  institution’s Director of Medical Services submitted  that  she was rushed to the school  clinic from  the practical class after  complaining of abdominal pains.

The statement added that the deceased  student was accompanied by her boyfriend who also confirmed that  she was actually pregnant.

‘Realizing that the clinic may not be able to treat the case properly, due to its nature, she was quickly referred to a private hospital in the town and was conveyed to the said hospital in one of the institution’s ambulances, accompanied by her boyfriend and  a nurse .

Her parents were promptly contacted, and they reportedly came to Ilaro’ the statement added.

The institution’s  Dean of  Student Affairs , Dr J. O. Omowunmi,  also confirmed that Ajayi’s parents  have already  taken  her body home using  the polytechnic’s ambulance.

‘In as much as the polytechnic regrets the unfortunate incident and commiserates with the parents, it is pertinent to reiterate that the death of Miss Ajayi was not as a result of negligence by the clinic as being peddled, but as a result of pregnancy-related complications.

The Rector, Dr Mikhail. Akinde, on behalf of the management team, staff and students at the polytechnic hereby, commiserates with the parents, friends, and classmates of the deceased and prays for the repose of her soul by Almighty God’  the statement said-Team@orientactualmags.com  Do you have any information you wish to share with us?
