Suleja Jailbreak: Kwara Police Command Says No Cause For Alarm But Urges Vigilance
Kwara state Police Command said on Sunday that there is no cause for concern with regard to the jailbreak incident that happened in Niger state while however urging residents of the State of Harmony to be vigilant.
Recall that 119 inmates escaped from the Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre, Niger state after a rainstorm damaged part of the facility last week Wednesday.
Niger is a neighbour of Kwara state.
Spokesperson for the state police command, Ejire-Adeyemi Toun, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, in a statement made available to Team@orientactualmags.com said collaborative efforts with other security agencies are ongoing to recapture the 105 fleeing inmates while urging residents of the state to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency.
‘On the 24th of April 2024, there was a heavy night-time rainstorm that caused an extensive damage on the Medium Security Custodial Centre , Suleja, Niger state, and it led to the escape of 118 inmates. A collapsed fence caused by the downpour facilitated the escape, as reported by the NPRO for the Nigerian Correctional Service, ACC Abubakar Umar.
In response to this incident, the Nigerian Correctional Service had promptly activated its recapturing protocols and so far, has successfully recaptured 13 of the escaped inmates. Collaborative efforts with other security agencies are ongoing to recapture the 105 fleeing inmates on the run.
As a neighboring state, the Kwara state police command is fully aware of the security implications of such an incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Victor OLAIYA psc(+), assures that the command is on high alert and is working closely with the relevant agencies to ensure the security and safety of our state.
He reassures the public that adequate measures have been put in place to prevent any attempt by the escaped inmates to enter or cause harm within the state. Patrols have been intensified along the border areas, and surveillance has been increased in vulnerable locations.
