Electricity Tariff Hike: Workers Occupy NERC Headquarters In Abuja, Jos Zonal Office

Electricity Tariff Hike: Workers Occupy NERC Headquarters In Abuja, Jos Zonal Office

Mr  Joe Ajaero led members of the  Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and the Trade Union Congress to occupy  the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) headquarters in Abuja on Monday.

Ajaero is the NLC President and the protesters reportedly forced their way into the NERC complex .

They were there to protest against electricity tariff hike especially  the Band A tariff hike.

The  ongoing picketing action is also expected to lead to the shutdown of the Abuja headquarters of the NERC, the Ministry of Power and state offices of the power distribution companies.

Recall that  NERC had  announced  electricity tariff  hike for Band A customers during the  press briefing  held in Abuja on April 3, 2024,  submitting  that those affected who were paying  N68/kWh would thenceforth pay N225 per kilowatt-hour.

Team@orientactualmags.com learned that members of the  NLC and TUC  in Plateau state also blocked the entrance of the headquarters of Jos Electricity Distribution Company in Jos, the state capital, on Monday.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s offices located at the Gold and Base axis in Jos were also picketed by the union members, leaving their workers stranded.

The state  NLC  Chairman , Eugene Mangji, noted  that the action was in compliance with the directive of their  respective national secretariats aimed at forcing the authorities to reverse the recent hike in the  electricity tariff.

‘We have shut down the NERC office at Gold and Base. Right now, we are the JED headquarters at the Ahmadu Bello Way. We will continue until the right thing is done’ Eugene said.

Recall that the  NLC, and  the TUC, had earlier asked the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC,  to reverse action on the electricity tariff hike  on or before May 12 or face unprecedented industrial action-Team@orientactualmags.com  Do you have any information you wish to share with us?
