In order to prevent an outbreak of cholera in Osun state, the State government through the Ministry of Environment and Sanitation , has taken measures to ensure that no case is reported in the state while also warning residents against poor sanitation.
A statement made available to Team@orientactualmags.com noted that the state Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Hon Mayowa Adejoorin said this on Sunday when he led officials of the ministry to the Afonta and Rasco areas of Osogbo, the state capital , which are mainly inhabited by non-indigenes.
The commissioner ,who registered his displeasure with the way residents of the areas in question littered the environment with refuse, warned that should this continue, the government may take drastic steps.
He, however, urged the residents to take responsibility by making sure that they clean up their environment always while also desisting from indiscriminate dumping of refuse , adding that anyone caught doing such will be dealt with according to the provisions of the law.
Leading the Environmental Marshals of the ministry to clean up the environment, the Director of Environmental Health and Sanitation, Wale Akala said ‘it is important that citizens play their roles in making sure that they maintain a clean environment always.
Addressing members of the Hausa community, Mr Akala complained of poor sanitation which was the reason why the ministry officials had to visit the place to take remedial steps while urging them to keep their environment clean at all times.
‘To be honest with you, your environment is very dirty and I am not happy about it. People living here are prone to different types of sicknesses and this may be inimical to our existence in the state.
The governor that we have loves people who maintain good hygiene practices . Please, what we have done here today, keep it up, tell your people to always keep their environment clean. I will be coming here regularly to see things for myself’ he said.
The director also sounded a note of warning to those who are found of dumping refuse indiscriminately to desist from doing so saying ‘Let me say it loud and clear, for those of us who are in habit of dumping refuse anywhere, it’s forbidden’.
‘We have PSP operators who come to our streets to pick up this refuse, let’s patronize them for our own sake. Anyone caught in this act will be dealt with.
Today is Sunday, when those who are Christians should be in their various churches, here we are cleaning up the environment just to make sure we have a healthy environment.
Already, we have outbreaks of cholera in Lagos, Ondo, Kwara and many other states and we don’t want such in Osun that is why we are all out this morning to make sure that we visit and clean up dirty areas in Osogbo and its environs’ Mr. Akala added.
Residents of the areas visited by the team were very happy as they appreciated this gesture of goodwill by coming out in large numbers to pray for Governor Adeleke and promise their unalloyed support for his administration-Team@orientactualmags.com Do you have any information you wish to share with us?
