Man, Wife, 5 Children Die After Eating Cassava In Sokoto…It’s 2nd Incident In The Country In One Week

 Sokoto state Commissioner for Health, Hajiya Asabe Balarabe led a delegation of government officials to  Runjin Barmo village , Kajiji District , Shagari Local Government, on Sunday.

She was there to condole with the family that lost seven people after eating food that was made from cassava.

It was the second incident in the country in one week.

Recall that four people were confirmed dead in Eruda community, Ilorin, Kwara state after eating amala, a  thick paste made from yam or cassava flour which is a common food in Yorubaland.

Kwara state  Commissioner for Health, Dr. Amina El-Imam told reporters last week Tuesday that the entire health team at the ministry visited the community having gotten informed that  a family lost  four people after eating amala.

The health commissioner disclosed that those who died had combined lafun with elubo isu while those who did not do this but only chose one out of the two, did not fall ill. She had also noted that there may have been a contamination of the lafun during its production

Lafun is made  from fermented dried cassava flour.

Information Officer, Sokoto state Ministry of Health, Nura Bello, in a statement issued  on behalf of the  Commissioner for Health on Sunday evening , said the  head of Runjin Barmo village , Malam Muhammadu Modi,  told members of the government delegation that the victims had the food made from cassava for dinner.

‘The victims comprise the Father, Malam Abubakar, his wife, A’ishatu Abubakar and their 5 Children. The incident happened last Wednesday and the cause of the death is yet to be confirmed.

He said this was because the suspected food made from Cassava was eaten by about 4 houses in the village and not any case of illness was recorded in those houses’ Nura Bello said.

The statement quoted the village head to have thanked  Governor Ahmed Aliyu for showing  concern , empathy  and support,

In her remarks, the  Commissioner for Health said they were in the village to assess the cause of the incident for onward communication to the state government in order to take necessary action.

The commissioner also disclosed that  the ministry would take samples from a teenager who ate the food  and has not felt unwell.

Hajiya Asabe Balarabe condoled with residents of the village over the incident and prayed that Allah will forgive those who have lost their lives while urging the people of the state to ensure that they report any strange disease in their respective communities promptly so as to take necessary steps-Team@orientactualmags.com  Do you have any information you wish to share with us?
