A final year student at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun state, Esu Rita Ema ,has died after being knocked down by a car while trying to cross the road on Thursday.
She was a final year student at the Department of Foreign Languages.
Spokesman for the university, Mr Abiodun Olarewaju, noted in a statement he issued in Ile –Ife on Thursday that Esu Rita Ema with Matriculation Number FRM/2019/041 was knocked down and killed by a Lexus car with registration number ABJ 427 LQ while adding that the name of the driver is Lasisi Sodiq Segun.
‘The student in question, who was said to be on her way to the campus to submit her final year project to her supervisor, was crossing the Ife – Ibadan axis of the road at the campus gate when the accident happened.
Federal Road Safety Corps officers came to recover her body and deposited same at the mortuary of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex at about 12:35pm while the driver has been arrested and taken into custody by the police for investigation and further necessary action.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, has sent a condolence message to the parents of the deceased student through the Dean, Student Affairs, Professor Adeolu Odedire.
Professor Bamire, who was visibly devastated said: ‘if it is very sad to lose a domestic animal, how can anyone quantify the loss of a child, most especially a grown up child who was a young, promising adult with a lot potentials. A final year student for that matter’.
