Dramatic Scenes, Keepsake Videos As ‘Ga Nu Si’ Enters Nigerian Social, Religious Lexicon

A new word ‘Ga nu si’ has entered Nigerian social and religious lexicon and the ‘creator’ is Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde, a popular fuji musician.

 Just like ‘o lule’, ‘emi lokan’, ’ofonee’ and others found their way into the nation’s political lexicon, ‘ga nu si’  has for days now trended online.

Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde had while making preparations for the fidau prayer held for his late mother, Alhaja Halima Shadiya Anifowoshe in Ijebu-Ode on Friday, January 24, 2025, made comments that had sparked reactions.

‘Alfas will not go to my father’s house for the party, It’s in my house that they will ‘Ga nu si’. Then, we will pray in my house before going back to my father’s house for the main party’ the popular fuji musician, who spoke in Yoruba , had said in the viral video in question.

The video became a meme and this had consequently made the popular fuji musician be in the spotlight.

On the day of the fidau prayer, the Grand Mufti of Ilorin, Sheikh Suleiman Faruq Onikijipa, who delivered a short sermon at the event, had commented on this and explained that Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde did not mean to insult Islamic clerics while urging him to apologize to the Alfas.

The popular fuji musician however noted that offering an apology was not needed because it would somewhat imply that he had truly offended the Islamic clerics which might be counterproductive.

Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde insisted that he did not intend any offence.

‘To admit guilt means saying, ‘Okay, don’t be angry.’ But there’s no reason for that because I have done nothing wrong. If you admit guilt, you are saying the accusations are true, and they are not’ he said.

This had given birth to viral videos and reactions from Islamic clerics and other Nigerians.

 Before anyone will turn it into a song, Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde as an incredibly talented musician quickly did.

K1 sang about this in a viral video taken during a live performance a few days ago;

‘Won ga nu si nilu Ijebu -Ode, won ga nu si nilu Ijebu -Ode, Eni to ga nu si soun lo ma rope da, soun lo ma rope da, wa ga nu si kiwo na rope da’.

In common parlance, ‘Ga nu si’ means ‘to wait in anticipation for something’ and some social media users had leapt to conclusions that he meant that the ‘alfas’ were eagerly waiting to ‘collect money’.

It created a mental image of people opening their mouths and finding it difficult to stay seated.

Prince Segun Fadairo, who is Yoruba Royal Ambassador, said ‘ga nu si’  means ‘waiting in expectations’  likening it to the scenario of someone who arrived at a place where they are planning to prepare   ‘amala’  and the host has already filled the pot with water, the person will definitely  wait in anticipation to be served .

Amala is a thick paste made from yam or cassava flour which is a common food in Yorubaland. He also said it is like waiting in anticipation for something that you are sure you will benefit from it once it is ready- Team@orientactualmags.com  Do you have any information you wish to share with us?
