Gov Otti Facilitates ‘Pardon’ For Abia Indigene, 2 Others On Death Row For Buying Stolen Generator
Mr. Ogbonnaya Igbojionu who hails from Ibere ,Ikwuano LGA, Abia State, Mr Olawale Adediji; and one other person, who were ordered to get executed by hanging for buying a stolen generator in Ogun State , have been rescued from the precarious situation.
They were presented to Governor Alex Otti at the Government House, Umuhaia, on Saturday by Simon Oshi from Enugu State, who facilitated their release.
Simon noted that he had learned about their case through a popular social media influencer, Olumide Ogunsanwo, who is popularly called ‘Sea King.’
‘When the influencer shared their story on social media, I felt compelled to verify it. I visited them at Kirikiri Prison with a team of lawyers and the influencer’ Simon Oshi submitted while adding that one of them, Igbojionu, had told him that he is from Abia State.
‘I told him I know your governor and that he’s a good and compassionate leader. I assured him I would reach out to Governor Otti’ he added.
Igbojionu and the two others had been on death row since 2003, sequel to an incident in 1999 involving the sale of a generator.
‘After 26 years behind bars, Otti has secured their freedom. This is a testament to his commitment to justice and compassion’ Simon Oshi said.
Governor Otti thanked Simon Oshi for his persistence and commended Ogunsanwo for using his platform to advocate for justice.
‘A typical Nigerian might say, ‘It doesn’t concern me,’ but you went out of your way. If you hadn’t brought it to my attention, I wouldn’t have known’ the governor said.
He explained that although the trial took place in Ogun State, the inmates were however incarcerated in Lagos.
He specially extended gratitude to Governor Dapo Abiodun for showing the needed cooperation.
‘When I contacted Governor Abiodun, he acknowledged the letter and assured me that he would act. Just last week, he called while I was out of the country to inform me that they have been released.
Justice is everything. You can accumulate wealth, but if you don’t help build a just society, it’s meaningless. We will all leave this world someday, and material possessions won’t follow us’ the governor submitted while assuring the former inmates of full support for their reintegration.
He has also directed two Commissioners Uzor Nwachukwu (Local Government) and Ikechukwu Monday (Power and Public Utilities) to work with relevant agencies in this respect.
‘This might not fall under your direct responsibilities, but I’m tasking you with coordinating their reintegration’ he said.
Speaking on behalf of the former inmates, Mr. Igbojionu noted that as a generator dealer, he had purchased a generator from one Segun Ajibade in 1999 and two weeks later, Ajibade returned with the police, claiming that the generator was a stolen item.
Igbojionu alleged that he was beaten, forced to sign a prepared statement without being allowed to read it, and eventually got a death sentence in 2003, after being remanded since 1999.
He expressed deep gratitude to Governor Otti for rescuing him from the jaws of death and giving him another chance at life-Team@orientactualmags.com Do you have any information you wish to share with us?
