Electoral Act Amendment Bill: Akpabio Says No Phone Network Coverage In 9 States As Senate Gets Set To Hold Emergency Session Next Tomorrow
The senate may this week make significant progress towards ending the controversy that has trailed the electoral act amendment bill as the issue will be extensively discussed during an emergency session that will be held on Tuesday, February 10, 2026.
Team@orientactualmags.com learned that the Senate Clerk, Emmanuel Odo made this announcement in a statement he issued on Sunday while noting that all senators have been asked to attend the emergency session.
‘The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has directed the reconvening of plenary for an emergency sitting on Tuesday, February 10th, 2026.
The session is scheduled to commence at 12 noon’ Emmanuel said.
In the meanwhile, the Senate President, Barrister Godswill Akpabio has explained reasons why real-time transmission of election results may be difficult because there is no phone network coverage in 9 states in the country.
Barrister Akpabio, who spoke during the launch and public presentation of a book titled ‘The Burdens of Legislators in Nigeria’, which was authored by Effiong Bob, a former senator, noted that it is the responsibility of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) to determine the way elections will be conducted.
‘Real-time transmission means that in over nine states where there is no phone network coverage because of insecurity, there will be no election results. Nationally, it means that if the national grid collapses and no network is working, no election results will be valid.
But you see them talking. We even have a young man from Akwa Ibom who is Publicity Secretary of one of the parties. When you see him talk, you will think he knows it all.
He doesn’t know anything about lawmaking, and he would talk and talk and talk. But what can I say? I can’t answer. The Senate does not conduct elections, we don’t deploy technology, we only make laws. And INEC must apply the law.
The timing scoop and modality rests with INEC, acting within the framework of the law enacted by the parliament and interpreted by the Supreme Court’ he said-Team@orientactualmags.com  Do you have any information you wish to share with us?
