King Sunny Ade @ 80: Kwara Juju Musicians To Hold All-Night Tribute In Ilorin Sept 21
As the global music community looks forward to celebrating the historic 80th birthday of juju music icon, Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye , who is fondly called King Sunny Ade, local artists are also coming up with beautiful ways to celebrate the milestone.
The Kwara State Chapter of the Association of Jùjú Musicians of Nigeria (AJUMN) has announced a grand, all-night musical tribute to celebrate the legendary maestro as he joins the octogenarian club.
In an industry where events are often driven by corporate sponsorships or personal gain, the Kwara State Jùjú musicians are doing things differently, the governor, Kwara State AJUMN, Mr Akobi Shiloh told Team@orientactualmags.com that the entire event is being funded completely out of their own personal purses, a selfless gesture that is driven by deep gratitude, respect, and a desire to preserve the legacy of the genre.
When asked about the motivation behind organizing this massive celebration, he explained that the event is a profound acknowledgement of KSA’s role as the architectural founder of modern Jùjú music.

‘If Baba King Sunny Adé didn’t pave the way, none of us would be able to stand and sing Jùjú music today. That is our main reason for celebrating him. He didn’t give us the money to do this; we are willingly doing this from our own pockets because he is the founder of this work, and we are simply following his path’ he said.

Are they organizing the event to raise funds? ‘There is nothing material that we want to gain from this. We are preparing for our own future. We want Baba to know that we recognize him as a father figure and our boss in this industry. We hope that as we honor him today, the next generation will do the same for us when we grow old. We also pray to grow and achieve even greater heights in the future’ he quipped.
The milestone event that will be held at 02 Arena, Starwood Hotel, Ilorin on September 21, 2026, will according to him be an explosive display of traditional rhythms, masterful guitar work, and the unmistakable vibrant energy of Jùjú music.
The concert will feature a massive lineup, with every single member of the Association of Jùjú Musicians Kwara State chapter taking the stage to perform.
A major highlight of the night will be a headline performance by the revered Baba Sunday Owolabi known for meticulously learning and mastering the specific, intricate performance patterns of King Sunny Adé right here in Kwara State.
Baba Sunday Owolabi’s performance promises to be a nostalgic and fitting tribute to the “Minister of Enjoyment” himself’ he added.
Music lovers and cultural enthusiasts from across the state are expected to attend the event that promises to be an unforgettable night of non-stop dance and celebration.
