I’ve Delivered On My Promise To Improve Power Supply-Power Minister
Minister of Power, Mr Joseph Tegbe has submitted and asserted that recent federal interventions have successfully boosted electricity supply in the country noting that some consumers have even humorously asked him to ‘slow down’ because their appliances are performing effectively.
Team@orientactualmags.com learned that the minister , who said this during the launch of a 3-megawatt solar hybrid power project at the Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja, highlighted the tangible results of the government’s recent initiatives submitting that regions previously left without electricity for months are now experiencing up to 18 hours of daily supply.
‘Some areas called me to say, ‘look, you should slow down’, saying that everything in their freezer is freezing.
That is what a freezer is meant to do. Let it freeze any food that needs to be frozen’ Mr Tegbe said.
The minister said he has delivered on the promise he made to improve power supply in the country during his confirmation hearing at the senate.
Despite the reported progress, Mr Tegbe acknowledged the deep-seated structural issues still plaguing the national grid pointing out that a significant portion of Nigeria’s power infrastructure is over 40 years old and requires urgent modernization.
‘We’re systematically replacing them, phasing them out and bringing new ones’ Mr Tegbe explained, while emphasizing the long-term plan to overhaul obsolete equipment.
Beyond aging machinery, deliberate economic sabotage also according to him remains a critical threat to grid stability lamenting that vandals recently destroyed three major transmission towers in Birnin Kebbi which supplies power to Kebbi State and exports electricity to the neighboring Niger Republic.
To combat this wave of destruction, Tegbe announced that the Federal Government has formed a joint working committee and a specialized task force that brings together the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to secure critical utility infrastructure and prosecute offenders.
Tegbe said more than 58,726 students are expected to benefit from the 3-megawatt solar hybrid power project which has 6,078 photovoltaic panels and 388 streetlights installed across University of Abuja.
