6 NDC Guber Candidates Reject Babachir Lawal’s Appointment As Northeast Leader

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Engineer Babachir Lawal has within his first week in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) faced a baptism of political fire from the home front.

Team@orientactualmags.com learned that the party’s gubernatorial candidates in the northeast have raised an objection to the mandate given to Mr Babachir Lawal to oversee NDC activities and campaigns in the region.

The six states in the northeast are Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe.

The gubernatorial candidates in a joint statement issued on Sunday and sent to the National Working Committee of NDC and its National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson collectively declared that they will not recognize Lawal as their leader.

The six candidates are Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed (Adamawa), Barrister Ibrahim Muhammad Kashim (Bauchi), retired Rear Admiral S. Kashim Ibrahim (Borno), Dr. Babayo Ardo (Gombe), Prof. Mohammed Sani (Taraba), and Ibrahim M. Shitu (Yobe).

They said there was a complete lack of ‘stakeholder consultation’ hence the decision to oppose the former SGF’s leadership..

‘After due consideration, we have unanimously resolved not to recognize Engr. Babachir Lawal as the Leader of the NDC in the Northeast, and we will not recognize him as such’ the guber candidates submitted while adding that the decision is ‘collective, firm, and final’.

Emphasizing that ‘politics is local’, they also criticized the national leadership for failing to engage key figures who have been driving grassroots mobilization across the region while noting that they felt uncertain about Mr Lawal’s potential to add value to the party’s electoral prospects.

They warned that imposing leaders without prior dialogue can jeopardize the party’s chances across the six Northeast states.
