ASUU: Over 900 Varsity Students Board Fare-Free Busses Provided By Kwara Govt In Ilorin

No fewer than 900 indigenes of Kwara state, who are  students  at public universities in the country , had the opportunity to join the fare-free busses provided by the state government  to make it easy for them to return to their   respective institutions sequel to the end of ASUU strike.

Over 50(fifty)  fare -free 18-seater Buses were made available for the beneficiaries who are students at  public universities  in the Northern part of the country.

Press Secretary, Ministry of Tertiary Education, Mrs. Mansurat Amuda-Kannike noted in a statement made available to  Team@orientactualmags.com  on Saturday that   this was done ‘in the early hours of today’ calling it ‘an exercise that has been described as first of its kind in the history of Kwara state ‘.

The statement quoted the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Dr. Alabi Afees Abolore  to have disclosed that the  Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq administration decided to offer  Kwara students up north the   fare-free bus travel  in order to relieve their parents after the much- awaited suspension of ASUU strike.

It will be recalled that members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU  who had stayed away from class since February 14, after accusing the federal government of failing to meet some of their demands, had ended the strike on  October 15.

It would also be recalled that the Ministry had a few days ago, announced plans to make  fare-free buses available for the use of the students  to ease their transportation to their various institutions.

The statement noted however that there was an upsurge in the number of students that appeared for documentation beyond the targeted volume that had earlier signified interest  to join the fare-free buses.

Dr. Abolore explained that the Ministry made provision for 13 arrival destinations, which include; Gombe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kaduna, Borno, Katsina, Kano, and FCT, among others noting that  all the buses had  since left Ilorin, the state capital.

While expressing his gratitude to Governor AbdulRazaq for this laudable initiative, the Commissioner also  emphasized the need for every government to be student-inclusive as the student community contributes a large quota towards the development of any society.

Abolore also lauded the governor for his exemplary leadership skills, which he noted had become beneficial to the Kwara student community as a whole.

The Welfare Director of the National Association of Kwara State Students (NAKSS), Comrade AbdulAfeez Saheed appreciated the efforts of the Ministry with regard to easing things for  the student community.

‘I have to appreciate the efforts of the Commissioner for Tertiary Education towards the propagation of the insightful administration of Mall. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, it is pertinent to note that Kwara Students are proud of the Governor as we have witnessed an increment in our upcoming bursary allowances.

This free transport scheme as well another initiative is enough to confirm the  willingness of our governor to   support  the student community and we appreciate his kind gesture’  Saheed said.

Comrade Babapupa Abdullateef, a  student leader  at  Umaru Musa Yar-Adua University ,  Kastina, also appreciated the state government for showing  kindness to  the students after the ASUU strike-   Team@orientactualmags.com
