A Boon For Peace Prospects As Rivers Assembly Suspends Impeachment Proceedings Against Gov Fubara

A Boon For Peace Prospects As Rivers Assembly Suspends Impeachment Proceedings Against Gov Fubara

There are signs that there is end in sight to the political rift between FCT minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike and Governor Siminalayi Fubara as members of the Rivers State house of assembly on Thursday suspended the impeachment proceedings against the governor and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.

Team@orientactualmags.com learned that the decision taken by the state parliament was sequel to the steps taken by President Bola Tinubu a few days ago.

The state lawmakers announced the decision to halt the impeachment proceedings during the plenary session held in Port Harcourt on Thursday.

Speaker Martin Amaewhule said the decision to halt the impeachment proceedings was sequel to the meeting held at the Presidential Villa at the instance of Mr President.

‘In furtherance of the outcome of the meeting we held with Mr President and other parties. That the governor and the deputy governor have gone ahead to withdraw the case they filed at the Rivers State High Court.

In response to their actions, yesterday we instructed our lawyers to also withdraw the matter we filed at the Court of Appeal, setting the way for the state to move forward. Having reported all of these, members agreed to halt the impeachment process against the governor and deputy governor’ he said.

Recall that Rivers State House of Assembly had last month begun impeachment proceedings against the governor and his deputy, Ngozi Odu and allegations of gross misconduct were leveled against them.

Team@orientactualmags.com  had reported that 26 people among members of the house of assembly had raised the allegations in a notice that was read out during plenary session by Majority Leader, Hon Major Jack, on Thursday.

Recall also that the lawmakers had begun impeachment proceedings against the governor and his deputy in March last year and the declaration of state of emergency by President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, had made them abandon it.

The lawmakers had noted that their action is in line with ‘Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and other existing laws’-

Following the second impeachment proceedings, the parliament had in a letter dated Friday, January 16, 2026, requested the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Simeon Amadi, to set up a seven-man panel to investigate the allegations against Governor Fubara and his deputy.

Justice Amadi however declined the request noting that he was restrained by a subsisting High Court order from taking further action on the matter.

Governor Fubara and Odu in separate suits challenging the impeachment process, had secured injunctions from a High Court in Port Harcourt restraining the Chief Judge from acting on the request made by the House of Assembly.

The Chief Judge had also noted that the Speaker and the Rivers State House of Assembly had appealed the restraining order granted by the High Court-Team@orientactualmags.com  Do you have any information you wish to share with us?
