The nation’s electoral umpire, the independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has suspended collation of results at the Collation Centre, Yola , Adamawa state and Nigerians would have to wait a little more before getting to know who would become the eventual winner of the 2023 Adamawa state governorship election.
It had been a very tight race, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri , who is the PDP candidate, is seeking re-election while Aisha Dahiru is the APC guber candidate.
Though governorship election was held in the state on March 18, it was declared inconclusive and the supplementary election held on Saturday appears not to have also produced a clear winner.
Team@orientactualmags.com learned INEC in a statement issued on Sunday submitted that Hudu Ari, the Resident Electoral Commission (REC), had declared Senator Aisha Dahiru, aka Binani, winner of the election under controversial circumstances.
Hudu Ari had announced Aishatu Ahmed Binani as winner of the election at about 9.30 am on Sunday less than two hours before the scheduled resumption of collation.
Barrister Festus Okoye, National Commissioner, Information & Voter Education, had since overruled him and ordered suspension of collation of the election results.
‘The attention of the Commission has been drawn to a purported declaration of winner in the Adamawa Governorship election by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) even when the process has clearly not been concluded.
The action of the REC is a usurpation of the power of the Returning Officer. It is null, void and of no effect.
Consequently, the collation of results of the supplementary election is hereby suspended. The REC, Returning Officer and all involved are hereby invited to the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja immediately’ the statement said- Team@orientactualmags.com
