Attention Returns To LG Autonomy As Edo Assembly Suspends LG Chairmen, Vice Chairmen … PDP Fumes

Edo State House of Assembly on Tuesday passed a resolution suspending chairmen and vice chairmen of the 18 local governments in the state for two months.

Recall that Governor Monday Okpebholo had a few days ago, directed chairmen of the 18 local governments in the state to make their respective financial statements available to the state government within 48 hours.

The development recorded on Tuesday has, once again, returned attention to the issue of local government autonomy.

The House of Assembly on Tuesday directed the leaders of the legislature in the 18 local governments to take over the running of the affairs of their respective councils.

Team@orientactualmags.com  learned that the suspension of the council chairmen and their deputies was sequel to the motion moved by Isibor Adeh, who represents Esan North East 1,  while it was seconded by Donald Okogbe  representing Akoko-Edo 2.

Governor Okpebholo had sent a letter of complaint to the House of Assembly sequel to the refusal of the chairmen in question to submit financial statements of their  respective local governments to the state government.

The governor described their action as an act of insubordination and gross misconduct, and urged the parliament to take necessary action.

During the floor debate, 14 members supported the motion for the suspension of the chairmen; six opposed the motion while three members took a neutral position.

Edo State PDP had since reacted to this development and condemned the suspension of the local government chairmen and their deputies by the state House of Assembly.

Caretaker chairman, Edo State PDP, Tony Aziegbemi said that the chairmen and their deputies did not get a fair hearing.

‘The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party condemns in the strongest terms the illegal suspension of the Chairmen of the 18 Local Governments in Edo State by the Edo State House of Assembly, following the directive of Governor Monday Okpebholo.
