Court Ruling: Senator Natasha Gives Reasons For Not Returning To Senate Chamber As Planned
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who had her suspension by the senate invalidated last week , has explained reasons why she did not return to the senate chamber as planned on Tuesday.
Team@orientactualmags.com learned that the senator in an interview with the African Independent Television on Tuesday explained that her decision to stay away from the senate chamber despite a favourable court ruling was sequel to a legal advice and the need to show deep respect for institutional procedures.
Natasha noted that she is yet to receive the Certified True Copy of the court ruling and will only know what steps to take after the important document must have been made available to her.
Recall that while the court had described her suspension as ‘excessive’ and ‘unconstitutional’, a counter-opinion dated July 5, reportedly authored by Senate’s lawyer, Paul Daudu, SAN, had claimed that the court ruling did not compel the Senate to allow Natasha to resume legislative duties.
‘I believe in the judiciary, I’m not giving up’ the senator submitted while noting that she had never been found wanting.
‘I remained active throughout. These are personal initiatives—I was hoping to finish the gold bill and move on to others like lithium and red mineral legislation. I can’t simply hand them over to others’ she added.
Senator Natasha listed her recent positive impacts to include installation of solar streetlights, the groundbreaking of smart markets across local governments in her senatorial district, and the distribution of laptops to students at Meseta Memorial College.
The senator also noted that keeping her away from the senate chamber has implications.
‘By keeping me out of the Senate chamber, the Senate is not just silencing Kogi Central—it’s denying Nigerian women and children representation. We are only three female senators now, down from eight.
I believe in the judiciary, I’m not giving up’ she submitted-Team@orientactualmags.com Do you have any information you wish to share with us? Do you want us to cover your event or programme?
