Customs CG Mourns The Death Of Etop Essien, Calls Him ‘Dedicated’, ‘Valued’ Team Member

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has mourned the death of a Deputy Controller of Customs ,Etop Essien , who died at the National Assembly Clinic , Abuja on Tuesday.
The deceased top customs officer had appeared before the Public Account Committee of the House of Representatives and was facing questions on revenue generated by the paramilitary agency and briefing the committee on the remittance of levies into designated bank accounts belonging to government when he suddenly paused and said ‘Sir, I need to take water’.
He was later rushed to the hospital but sadly died.
Recall that the House of Representatives had continued its ongoing probe of revenue-generating agencies and parastatals of the Federal government.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, spokesman for the NCS, Abdullahi Maiwada, said until his death, Essien had served as the Deputy Comptroller in charge of revenue in the account’s unit.
‘During his presentation, approximately three minutes into it, Deputy Comptroller Essien requested water and showed signs of discomfort. Despite immediate efforts to assist him, he unfortunately passed away’ Maiwada said.
He added that Essien, who joined the NCS in 1989, was born in 1967.
Essien, who hailed from Akwa Ibom state, he added, was known for his diligence and exceptional service record in the account’s unit.
‘His role as the deputy controller, revenue was pivotal in ensuring the accurate reconciliation of revenue, which he performed with utmost precision and dedication’ he said.
The statement added that the Comptroller General of Customs, Mr Adewale Adeniyi, on behalf of the entire officers and men of the service, has extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased officer .
‘The loss of such a dedicated and valued team member is deeply felt across the Service.
