Customs Officer, Wife, 4 Children Die In Devastating House Fire In Osun

Four children were among those who lost their lives in a large house fire in Ede, Osun State on Monday.

The incident that occurred in the Olowopoku area of the ancient town, had a Customs officer, Tijani Kabiru, his wife, and four children as casualties.

The late Tijani Kabiru was until his death attached to the Oyo/Osun Command of the Nigeria Customs Service.

The fire was reportedly caused by solar panel.

Leading causes of fires in solar installations include poor installation, overheating, electrical faults, inadequate maintenance, and lightning.

‘The fire started at about 2:09 am from the roof of the house. An electric spark from the solar panel attached to the roof caused the fire.  One of the children, a 13-year-old, was reading when the fire started; he ran to Kabiru’s room but realized that his father and other family members were weak due to the emission of smoke. He ran out of the house to call for help. It was however difficult for co-residents to access the house because of electric barbed wires, strong doors among others. 

We informed the Firefighters at about 3:10 am. But before they arrived at the scene, Tijani, his wife, and four children had already gotten burnt to death’ one of the residents of the area, said.

‘It is true that one Tijani, a Customs officer, his wife and four children were burnt to death. Only one of them escaped from the scene.
