Defamation Case: Former Rep Austin Okai Remanded In Custody
Chief Magistrate Abdullahi Musa-Mopa of the Lugard Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lokoja, Kogi State, has ordered that a former member of the House of Representatives, Austin Okai should be remanded in a correctional centre.
Recall that Okai, a Kogi State PDP bigwig, was arrested and taken into custody by the Department of State Services on Wednesday.
He was arrested for defaming Kogi State governor, Alhaji Ahmed Ododo.
He had accused the governor of misusing funds belonging to local governments in the state.
DSS prosecution counsel, Izo Isaac said Okai had engaged in cyberstalking and criminal defamation of character by alleging in social media posts that Governor Ododo misused billions of naira meant for local governments and some government agencies in the state.
‘Today’s arraignment of the accused is to ensure compliance with the law by not keeping him beyond 48 hours in our custody without the lawful permission of the court, in line with the Criminal Justice System of Nigeria.
We hereby apply to this honourable court to grant our application for remanding the accused in a correctional centre. This is to enable the DSS to conclude their investigations into the allegations of cyberstalking and criminal defamation leveled against Austin Okai’ the DSS Prosecution counsel said.
