Ebang Sex Tapes: Equatorial Guinea Govt’s Decision To Get Social Media Restricted Sparks Outrage
Equatorial Guinea government has reportedly restricted citizens from using popular Apps including WhatsApp as the issue of the sex tapes involving Baltasar Ebang Engonga, the former head of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), continues to be a subject of discussion.
The citizens had since November 4, faced major disruptions and they could not send and download multimedia files on WhatsApp .
The citizens leapt to conclusions that this was a consequence of recent government directive to the telecom operators to restrict access to certain contents.
Social media users can no longer share photos, videos, or audio files using mobile data and they have been made to depend solely on Wi-Fi for such exchanges.
This decision has sparked outrage among the citizens with many questioning whether it is right for the entire nation to bear the brunt for the actions of a few people.
54-year-old, Baltasar Ebang Engonga, an economist, had been in the spotlight after his house and office were searched without notice by ANIF officials who came across several sex tapes that revealed his sexcapades with over 400 women including married women. The list includes the president’s sister.
The sex tapes were first spread on WhatsApp groups and later posted to Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and X.
Nicknamed as ‘Bello’ on account of his good looks, Ebang Engonga is a married man and he is the son of Baltasar Engonga Edjo, the current Chairman of the Commission of the Central African Economic and Monetary Community.
The country’s vice president Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue had last week disclosed that he has given 24 -hour notice to Equatorial Guinea’s telecommunications ministry, regulator and telephone companies ‘to curb the distribution of pornographic videos that are flooding social networks in Equatorial Guinea’.
