Effective  Local Government  Key To Local Economic Development-Osun Governor-Elect

Effective  Local Government  Key To Local Economic Development-Osun Governor-Elect

Osun state  Governor  – elect , former Senator Ademola Adeleke, has restated his commitment to local government reforms to significantly guarantee  the wellbeing  of Osun state people and improve their  living conditions especially  at the grassroots.

He also submitted that  an effective local government would help to achieve local economic development.

Giving his speech after receiving the reports submitted by  the  sub-committees  of  the  Transition Committee that was set up a few days ago,  Adeleke described local governments as ‘the building blocks of good governance’  promising  to fulfill electoral promises by ensuring true autonomy for the third tier   of government.

‘I want to commend the various sub-committees for the fantastic job. Let me restate here that local government reforms is so dear to my heart because of so many reasons. First, a strong local government is the best way to ensure grassroots development. Two, poverty alleviation is largely a local matter. So local governments with the required resources will speed up prosperity, more importantly, competition will become the order of the day among the council chairmen.

I remember those days when council chairmen competed for commissioning of projects. Those in charge of local governments built roads, developed agriculture, markets and transport terminals. I look forward to the return of that era when council chairmen will fill the Governor’s schedule with inauguration of projects’ the Governor-elect submitted.

He however promised that his administration will restore accountability and transparency with regard to the operations of the local governments to block excesses and corruption.

“We will not support an autonomy that encourages the idea of people getting defrauded. We will ensure that resources and responsibilities devolved to the local governments in line with the Constitution are handled in compliance with due process and anti-corruption laws’ he added.

Mallam Olawale Rasheed, who  is the Chairman, Media Sub-Committee of the  Transition Committee , noted in a statement made available to Team@orientactualmags.com  on Monday that the Committees that  submitted  their reports  include government structure, legislative relations, public service, local governments and workers’ sector- Team@orientactualmags.com
