Electricity: Ekiti Govt Opposes Proposed 9-Hour Power Outage Daily For 2 Months, Says Important Meeting ’ll Be Held With IBEDC Tomorrow
Ekiti state government has objected to the planned power outages announced by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) during the weekend submitting that it will amount to ‘an unacceptable economic, financial, and social price to be paid by the citizens of the state’.’.
Recall that the TCN had in a public notice issued on Sunday noted that Ondo and Ekiti states will experience power outages that will last nine hours daily, starting from Monday, July 1 to August 31.
‘Please, be informed that the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, is scheduled to carry out critical maintenance work on the 132kV Akure- Osogbo transmission line. The planned work involves the installation of Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) and other activities. This will require outage on the affected network for a safe working space.
Customers in the affected areas will experience service interruptions during the period of the planned outages. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this may cause and kindly solicit your patience and understanding’ the TCN had submitted.
Team@orientactualmags.com learned that the state Commissioner for Infrastructure and Public Utility, Prof Bolaji Aluko in a letter sent to the MD/CEO, Transmission Company of Nigeria, Abuja, which had the MD/CEO, Benin Electricity Distribution Company, Benin-City, and the Chairman, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Company, Abuja, cc’d ,and was dated June 30, noted that the state government was neither informed nor was its approval sought and obtained through the Ekiti state Electricity Regulatory Bureau, which is saddled by law with the authority to regulate the electricity industry in the state.
The letter in question was titled “Re: Notification of Power Disruption/Outage in Ado-Ekiti and Akure for two months (July, August 2024)’ and while calling for cancellation of the proposed power outages, he has also proposed that an emergency meeting be held with the regional heads of TCN, BEDC and National Electricity Regulatory Commission on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, in his office in Ado Ekiti ‘to devise an alternative and far less adverse plan to achieve the same stated aim’.
‘The planned disruption of electricity in these two months amounts to an unacceptable economic, financial, and social price to be paid by the citizens of Ekiti state, and we totally reject such a plan.
Our attention has been called to public notifications, both in print and in jingles in English and in Yoruba, of the intention of BEDC under advice by TCN to disrupt power supply to the transmission stations in Akure and Ado-Ekiti – and in effect to adversely affect the Ekiti state and Ondo state areas – for nine hours each day (8.00am to 5.00pm) from July 1, 2024 to August 31, 2024.
We request prompt attention to this matter while we are eager to work collaboratively toward a sustainable solution that will benefit both citizens of the state and the Ekiti State Electricity Supply Industry’ he submitted-Team@orientactualmags.com Do you have any information you wish to share with us?
