Environmental Violation: Ilorin Mandate Market Shut Down For A Few Hours
The Mandate International Market, Ilorin was on Thursday shut down for a few hours by the Kwara state Ministry of Environment, the ministry cited failure to comply with environmental law.
Press Secretary of the Ministry of Environment , Mr. Yakub K Aliagan, who disclosed in a statement made available to Team@orientactualmags.com on Thursday, noted that the state Commissioner for Environment, Mallam Shehu Ndanusa Usman directed that the market should be shut down, after several warnings to the market leaders by the Ministry.
‘Following the violation of environmental law, Kwara state Government in the early hours of today shut down the Mandate market, for non- compliance with the law.
We decided to close the market after several meetings with the market leaders by officials of our Ministry where the need to strictly adhere to the environmental law was expressed but this fell into deaf ears. We had reminded them several times of the need to clean their environment and evacuate the refuse which may cause an outbreak of disease in the state, but to our dismay, there was non-compliance, and this resulted in the steps we took today’ the statement said.
The Commissioner added that the temporary closure of the market was an enough warning to all other markets in the state to desist from violating environmental laws or else the ministry would not have any option than to close down erring markets.
He however restated the commitment of the current administration in the state to sustaining a clean and hygienic environment, to ensure healthy living of Kwara residents .
‘After several hours of closure, the market was however reopened, following the intervention of some stakeholders in the state, with a promise to henceforth comply with environmental laws’ the statement- submitted-Team@orientactualmags.com
