Falana Blames Police For Crowd Crushes At Charity Events
Human rights lawyer, Mr Femi Falana has blamed the Nigeria Police Force for the causalities recorded at charity events in the country recently as a result of crowd stampedes.
Recall that at least 35 children were killed and six others critically injured in a crowd crush at a funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, a few days ago.
The event was organized by Agidigbo FM and the Women in Need of Guidance and Support (WING).
Recall also that at least 10 people died in the crowd stampede that was recorded during the distribution of food parcels at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, Abuja, while a crowd crush that led to the death of 17 people also occurred at the gate of the Obijackson Centre, Okija, Ihiala Local Government, Anambra State on the same day.
They were there to receive the food items made available by an indigene of the town, Chief Ernest Obiejesi (Obijackson).
Team@orientactualmags.com learned that Falana gave his take on the issue in his speech during the public lecture held in memory of late Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, in Akure on Friday.
Akeredolu served as governor of Ondo State from 2017 to 2023.
Falana submitted that the Police had failed to fulfill their constitutional duties which led to the deaths and injuries recorded at charity events in the country.
‘The deaths of 115 Nigerians in recent incidents in Ibadan, Abuja, and Okija are unacceptable. The Police failed to protect the people, and I hold them responsible. The government must compensate the families who lost their loved ones because of these failures’ the popular lawyer submitted while urging the government to address social insecurity, which is evident in the rising levels of poverty, unemployment, hunger, and illiteracy in the country.
He also emphasized that without social security and physical security, the safety of lives and property cannot be guaranteed-Team@orientactualmags.com Do you have any information you wish to share with us?
