Family Member Condemns Death Of Pre-Trial Detainee At Ilorin Correctional Facility, Says ‘It Could Have Been Avoided’

The death of an Ilorin-based land agent, Alhaji Taye Hussein Abubakar, has  stirred controversy.

Taye, who was remanded in custody and was  a pre-trial detainee  at the Oke Kura Correctional Facility, Ilorin, Kwara state,  reportedly died on Friday.

Team@orientactualmags.com learned that Alhaji Taye Hussein Abubakar,  had gotten involved in a land transaction that resulted in an agent-client conflict and it reportedly had to do with  the sale of a piece of land in one of the suburbs of Ilorin , the Kwara state capital .

Since the conflict was not resolved , the  client in question had filed  a lawsuit that allegedly made Taye to become  a pre-trial detainee  at the Oke Kura Correctional Facility.

The 63-year-old land agent had been accused of jumping bail.

The deceased land agent’s relative, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told journalists on Friday that his death could have been avoided.

‘He was involved in a land transaction that resulted in lawsuit.  The court released him on bail. But he was not present in court on the subsequent court date  because he was sick. So, he was picked up and detained since  about four or five months ago. And he was not brought to court since then but abandoned. At least, he should have been given a second chance. How could he have gotten money to repay those he was involved in the land transaction if kept behind bars? The judge was approached and begged to release him on bail with some sureties to stand for him but all to no avail.

So, on Friday, we learned that he was rushed to the hospital. Some said he died on the way to  the hospital while some others said that he died while receiving treatment. His health condition was bad before his death and the judge was aware’ he said.

Spokesperson  for the Nigerian Correctional Service ,  Kwara state command, Mr. Phillip Adegbulugbe, though  confirmed the death of the land agent in question but  however clarified  that he died in the hospital .

‘He was taken to  the General Hospital, Ilorin where he died. I saw his hospital file stating the illness. He was taken to the  hospital on Thursday evening and reportedly died at about 8:00 am today, Friday.

He didn’t die at the correctional  facility as some people were saying. I was just returned from the hospital’ he said-Team@orientactualmags.com  Do you have any information you wish to share with us? Do you want us to cover your event or programme?
