FEC Keeps Decision On Minimum Wage ‘In Abeyance’, Cites Need To Consult Widely

The Federal Executive Council disclosed on Tuesday that the decision on the report of the Tripartite Committee on New National Minimum Wage will be kept in abeyance in order to allow more consultations between President Bola Tinubu, state governors, local government authorities and the private sector.
Team@orientactualmags.com learned that the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, who disclosed this while talking to journalists after the meeting of the Federal Executive Council at the State House, Abuja, on Tuesday, added that the cabinet has done this cognizant that the Federal Government is not the sole stakeholder when it comes to national minimum wage issue.
‘I want to inform Nigerians that the Federal Executive Council deliberated on that (minimum wage) and the decision is that because the new national minimum wage is not just that of the Federal Government, it is an issue that involves the Federal Government, the state governments, local governments, and the organized private sector and of course, the organized labour.
That memo was stepped down to enable Mr President to consult further, especially with the state governors and the organized private sector, before he makes a presentation to the National Assembly. He must do this before an executive bill is presented to the National Assembly.
So, I want to state that on the new national minimum wage, Mr President is going to consult further so that he can have an informed position because the new national minimum wage, as I said, is not just an issue of the Federal Government’ he said.
Idris added that the President has studied the report and will ‘consult widely before a final submission is made to the National Assembly’.
Recall that President Bola Tinubu had on January 30, 2024, inaugurated the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage which was tasked with recommending a new national minimum wage for the Nigerian workers in the public and the private sectors.
Recall also that the Tripartite Committee had made its report available to the SGF, Chief George Akume for onward submission to President Bola Tinubu earlier this month-Team@orientactualmags.com Do you have any information you wish to share with us?
