Former First Lady of Gabon, Sylvia Bongo and her son, Noureddin Bongo got jail sentences on Tuesday.
They were accused of misusing public funds when former president Ali Bongo was in charge of the affairs of the country. They got a 20-year sentence each.

Sylvia and her son, were accused of exploiting the former president’s condition after he suffered a stroke in 2018 and began to run Gabon for their own personal gain.

Recall that Brice Oligui Nguema had led the military coup that got Ali Bongo ousted in August 2023 and he had since transformed into a civilian president after winning the presidential election that was held in April 2025,
Bongo, who had ruled for 14 years, was removed from office via a military coup shortly after he was announced as winner of a presidential election that had the army and opposition declaring it fraudulent.
Sylvia Bongo, 62, and her son, Noureddin, 33, were tried in absentia.
However, former president Ali Bongo is not facing charges and he was also recently released from house arrest.
