Gov Idris And The Spirit Of Ramadan: A Season Of Mercy, Benevolence And Palliatives-Yahaya Sarki

Gov Idris And The Spirit Of Ramadan: A Season Of Mercy, Benevolence And Palliatives-Yahaya Sarki

Ramadan remains the most sacred and spiritually uplifting month in the Islamic calendar. As the ninth month of Islam, it is a period of fasting, devotion, self-discipline, sacrifice, charity, and compassion. From dawn to sunset, Muslims abstain from food, drink, and worldly indulgences in obedience to Allah, while drawing closer to Him through prayers, reflection, and good deeds. It is also the blessed month in which the Holy Qur’an was revealed, and within it lies Lailatul Qadr, the Night of Majesty, which is better than a thousand months.

Beyond fasting, Ramadan is a season of mercy and humanitarian service. It is a period when Muslims are reminded about taking care of the poor, the vulnerable, the orphans, and the needy. The Holy Qur’an and the Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) strongly encourage believers to feed others, extend kindness, and support one another. Indeed, Ramadan teaches that true faith is expressed not only through worship but also through service to humanity.

It is in faithful observance of these noble Islamic teachings that the Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris, the Kauran Gwandu, has once again, demonstrated uncommon generosity and compassionate leadership by extending massive Ramadan packages to the people of Kebbi State.

His administration has reached a wide spectrum of beneficiaries, including civil servants, local government workers, legislators, political stakeholders, religious leaders, students, people with special needs, organizations, and vulnerable citizens across the state.

This remarkable intervention stands as one of the most extensive humanitarian gestures in the history of Kebbi State. Records indicate that over one million people have directly or indirectly benefited from the Ramadan packages that were distributed under Governor Nasir Idris’ leadership. At a time when many families are grappling with economic hardship, the governor’s timely support has brought relief, hope, and a renewed faith in responsive governance.

At the official flag-off ceremony held at Haliru Abdu Stadium, Birnin Kebbi, Governor Nasir Idris announced the distribution of 6,500 tons of assorted grains, comprising rice, maize, and millet, to cushion the effects of hardship during the holy month. The event drew commendation from dignitaries, including the Honourable Minister of Agriculture, Senator Abubakar Kyari, who praised the governor for the bold and people-oriented initiative.

One of the most notable aspects of this Ramadan intervention was the governor’s decision to make the student community be among the beneficiaries. Student leaders and stakeholders across Kebbi State openly expressed deep appreciation for what they described as a historic and unprecedented kind gesture.

The governor’s Special Adviser on Student Affairs, Comrade Majo Muhammad, commended him for remembering students during Ramadan, stressing that the move reflects the governor’s inclusive style of leadership and unwavering commitment to the welfare of young people.

According to him, the Ramadan packages are expected to be made available to at least 1,500 students across various institutions. He described the intervention as record-breaking for the student constituency and noted that it aligns perfectly with Governor Nasir Idris’ campaign promise to run a government that prioritizes the welfare of every segment of society. He further referred to the Governor as ‘Governor Al-Ummah’,  ‘Governor Matasa’ and ‘Governor Dalibai’ in recognition of his sustained support for the people, youths, and students.

Other student leaders echoed similar sentiments. The President of the National Union of Kebbi State Students (NUKESS), Comrade Sa’idu Bakuwai, described the kind  gesture as rare, thoughtful, and deeply impactful, noting that it would ease the burden on students during Ramadan. Likewise, Comrade Ladan Mikhailu Fakai, speaking on behalf of the Forum of Stakeholders, Kebbi State Chapter, praised the governor for strengthening students’ confidence in government through practical support. A representative of the Joint Campus Committee (JCC), Suleiman Attahiru Sarki, assured that a transparent and equitable distribution mechanism had been put in place to ensure fairness.

Beyond the material value of the Ramadan packages, the initiative has inspired a broader culture of compassion across Kebbi State. Influential public office holders, wealthy individuals, and spirited organizations have followed the governor’s example by reaching out to communities with food items, cash support, and acts of kindness. In many respects, Kebbi has become a shining symbol of Ramadan generosity, love, and communal solidarity.

Indeed, the humanitarian disposition of Governor Nasir Idris did not begin with his assumption of office. His generosity, benevolence, and deep concern for the welfare of ordinary people have long defined his public life. Today, those qualities are fully reflected in the trajectory of his administration-an administration firmly anchored on service, empathy, development, and the upliftment of all people of Kebbi State.

As Ramadan continues to remind believers of the virtues of sacrifice and compassion, Governor Nasir Idris has translated those values into governance. Through his far-reaching palliative programme, he has not only fed the hungry but also strengthened hope, restored dignity, and reaffirmed the bond between leadership and the people.

This is leadership with a human face. This is governance inspired by faith. And this is why the people of Kebbi continue to see in the Kauran Gwandu not just a governor, but also a compassionate guardian of the people-Mr Yahaya Sarki, who is Governor Nasir Idris’ Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, writes from Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State.
