Governors Have ‘Abused’ Immunity, Only President, VP Should Henceforth Enjoy Such A Privilege-Senator Gbenga Daniel

Governors Have ‘Abused’ Immunity, Only President, VP Should Henceforth Enjoy Such A Privilege-Senator Gbenga Daniel

Senator Gbenga Daniel, who represents Ogun East in the senate, has emphasized the need to amend the nation’s constitution and have the state governors stopped from enjoying immunity while allowing only the President and Vice-President to enjoy such a privilege.

Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution protects the President, Vice-President, Governors, and Deputy Governors from prosecution while in office.

Team@orientactualmags.com learned that Daniel, who served as governor of Ogun State between 2003 and 2011, gave his take on the issue while appearing on Channels TV’s Political Paradigm programme  on Tuesday.

Senator Daniel also commented on the recent reversal of decision by the House of Representatives on a bill seeking to withdraw immunity from vice-presidents, governors, and their deputies.

‘Immunity has the good sides, but to a large extent, I think, some of our elected governors appear to have abused it, in terms of some of the things they do.

Some of them virtually have turned the state into their personal fiefdom, and they think the property of the state belongs to them, and they can do it whichever way they want, without even recourse to the House of Assembly’ the senator submitted while giving reasons why only the President and Vice-President should enjoy immunity.

‘I think that only the president and the vice-president should be allowed to have absolute immunity so that they can concentrate, and so that no one will be embarrassing the symbol of the country’ he said.

The former governor also noted that the immunity for governors and deputy governors should be removed from the nation’s constitution or get modified.

‘The governors and their deputies should have their immunity clarified. Probably, yes, they have immunity from what you call criminal prosecution, but there are other things that are not criminal.

There is no reason why they should not be held accountable while in office’ the former governor added-Team@orientactualmags.com  Do you have any information you wish to share with us?
