Hakeem Garuba Re-elected As Kwara Correspondents’ Chapel Chairman

Mallam Abdulhakeem Garba,   a Channels TV  reporter, was on Wednesday re-elected as  chairman of the  Correspondents’ Chapel of the  Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) , Kwara state council.

In the  election that was  supervised by the working committee of the state NUJ,  Mallam Garba  had  29 votes while his co-contestant, Mr  Femi Akobi , an AIT reporter,   got  9 votes.

The new Treasurer ,Bushrah Yusuf-Badmus ,a NAN correspondent,   had  23 votes while   Mr  Kehinde Akinpelu , the  Daily Times newspaper correspondent , who  had sought to retain his seat,  got  15 votes .

Sikirat Shehu , the  Business News  newspaper correspondent,  also had  26 votes  and got declared and announced as  the new Financial Secretary while  Mr  Lukman Oyedeji ,  a Channels TV reporter, who had sought to retain his position,  got  12 votes.

Mr Biola Azeez- Nigerian Tribune, Mr Kayode Azeez – Nigerian Pilot newspaper, Mr Taiye Joseph- Graphic newspaper  and Mosunmola Ayobami – Western Post  were elected unopposed as Vice-Chairman, Secretary, Assistant Secretary and Auditor  respectively.

Kwara state NUJ Chairman , Mallam Abdullateef Ahmed, described  the  election as peaceful  and one that would become a reference point.

He  also noted  that the council   ensured  that it was guided by the NUJ constitution in supervising  the election  process , adding that membership requirements of the council, as stated by the constitution, should be respected by  the members.

The NUJ chairman submitted that it was a good development that the election was  eventually held peacefully  despite  the crisis that had punctuated the election process.

It will be  recalled that the state NUJ  had received petition from some among the  members accusing the credential committee set up by the chapel of bias.

This development had  made the state council  set up a fresh  credential committee that eventually supervised the election that was held on  Wednesday .

The NUJ chairman  however cautioned  that disagreement among members, especially during elections, should not be allowed to disintegrate the union, while expressing the need to show respect to  elders in  the union  at all times-Team@orientactualmags.com
