Hakeem Garuba Re-elected As Kwara Correspondents’ Chapel Chairman
Mallam Abdulhakeem Garba, a Channels TV reporter, was on Wednesday re-elected as chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) , Kwara state council.
In the election that was supervised by the working committee of the state NUJ, Mallam Garba had 29 votes while his co-contestant, Mr Femi Akobi , an AIT reporter, got 9 votes.
The new Treasurer ,Bushrah Yusuf-Badmus ,a NAN correspondent, had 23 votes while Mr Kehinde Akinpelu , the Daily Times newspaper correspondent , who had sought to retain his seat, got 15 votes .
Sikirat Shehu , the Business News newspaper correspondent, also had 26 votes and got declared and announced as the new Financial Secretary while Mr Lukman Oyedeji , a Channels TV reporter, who had sought to retain his position, got 12 votes.
Mr Biola Azeez- Nigerian Tribune, Mr Kayode Azeez – Nigerian Pilot newspaper, Mr Taiye Joseph- Graphic newspaper and Mosunmola Ayobami – Western Post were elected unopposed as Vice-Chairman, Secretary, Assistant Secretary and Auditor respectively.
Kwara state NUJ Chairman , Mallam Abdullateef Ahmed, described the election as peaceful and one that would become a reference point.
He also noted that the council ensured that it was guided by the NUJ constitution in supervising the election process , adding that membership requirements of the council, as stated by the constitution, should be respected by the members.
The NUJ chairman submitted that it was a good development that the election was eventually held peacefully despite the crisis that had punctuated the election process.
It will be recalled that the state NUJ had received petition from some among the members accusing the credential committee set up by the chapel of bias.
This development had made the state council set up a fresh credential committee that eventually supervised the election that was held on Wednesday .
The NUJ chairman however cautioned that disagreement among members, especially during elections, should not be allowed to disintegrate the union, while expressing the need to show respect to elders in the union at all times-Team@orientactualmags.com
