Members of the public have been urged to ignore the media report claiming that there has been an outbreak of cholera in Osun state while also alleging that 11 cases have already been reported.
Governor Ademola Adeleke’s Special Adviser on Health Matters, Dr. Adekunle Akindele asserted in a statement made available to Team@orientactualmags.com on Sunday that the state is yet to record any confirmed case of cholera while describing the media report that had claimed that 11 cases have already been reported in the state as inaccurate and untrue.
Dr. Akindele clarified that contrary to assertions in the report in question, Osun state had recorded 13 suspected cases of cholera which all turned out negative after a laboratory assessment.
He assured the people of the state of adequate preventive measures by the government to prevent an outbreak of cholera in the state and respond to such if a case is recorded.
‘Osun state Government through the Ministry of Health, has proactively reactivated and established the Public Health Rapid Response Team (PHRRT) and Cholera Technical Working Group (CTWG) respectively, to ensure adequate surveillance and risk communication activities in order to guarantee the health of the citizens.
Though, Osun is yet to record any confirmed case of Cholera, adequate preventive measures have been put in place to prevent the occurrence, and respond to the outbreak in the event that we eventually record a case’ he said.
Dr. Akindele also noted that the State Government is sensitizing the public on preventive measures against cholera through the media while surveillance mechanisms across the 30 local governments and border towns have been heightened to fight the spread of the disease.
‘Thirteen (13) sample(s) collected so far. All 13 samples sent to laboratory, of which 13(100%) were negative, 0 positive and no pending result’ he submitted while adding that ‘rapid diagnostic test (RDT) kits for cholera have been strategically distributed to some Health Facilities across the 30 LGAs in the state’.
He also said the Ministry of Health will continue to intensify public awareness on the prevention of cholera and what to do when symptoms develop while urging the media not to ‘pander to sensationalism at a time like this but rather focus on the dissemination of information that will save lives’-Team@orientactualmags.com Do you have any information you wish to share with us?
