Ilorin-Based Group Laments High Airfares, Urges Gov Abdulrazaq To Intervene

Ilorin-Based Group Laments High Airfares, Urges Gov Abdulrazaq To Intervene

High airfares has become a source of concern for air travelers in the State of Harmony and there is a need to rectify the situation in order to enhance accessibility to travel for a wider range of people in the state, the Kwara By Consensus Group (KBCGroup), has submitted.

Mallam Abdul-Hamid Sambo

The group in a statement issued in Ilorin and made available to Team@orientactualmags.com by its chairman, Mallam Abdul-Hamid Sambo noted that airfares are higher in Kwara State than other states in the country while alleging that it is not only an economic inconvenience but also ‘an act of sabotage against the growth and accessibility to travel for residents of Kwara State’.

‘Airfare to and from Ilorin is considered as the most expensive in the country. The prohibitive pricing of air tickets is discouraging visitors, investors, and even indigenes from visiting the state, thereby stifling tourism, business opportunities, and the ability of people to witness firsthand the remarkable transformations taking place on Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s watch.

It is disheartening that at a time when Ilorin, the state capital, is undergoing a massive urban renewal programme—transforming into a modern megacity with improved infrastructure, aesthetics, and economic viability—many Nigerians are being priced out of the opportunity to visit and experience these developments. The high cost of air travel makes it nearly impossible for tourists to explore Kwara’s rich cultural heritage, such as the Esie Museum, Owu Falls, and other emerging attractions. It also discourages potential investors, diaspora Kwarans, and visitors who wish to engage with the state’s growing economy’ the group said.

KBC Group emphasized the need for Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to intervene while suggesting an ‘action plan’.

‘We find this situation unacceptable and call on His Excellency, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, to take urgent action by:

1. Engaging with Airlines and Regulatory Bodies: Initiating discussions with airline operators and the Federal Ministry of Aviation to address the unjustifiable pricing on the Ilorin route.

2. Promoting Healthy Competition: Encouraging more airlines to operate in Ilorin to reduce monopolistic tendencies which will ensure cheaper fares.

3. Exploring Subsidies or Incentives: Considering temporary subsidies or waivers to make flights more affordable while long-term solutions are implemented.

4. Leveraging Public Awareness: Highlighting the economic implications of these high airfares and rallying stakeholders to demand fairness.

Kwara State is on a transformative journey, and we cannot allow exorbitant airfares to become an obstacle to progress’ the group added while urging the state government to attach importance to the issue and make things right noting that this will help to enhance commerce, tourism, and overall connectivity.

KBC Group also emphasized the need for the Federal Government, aviation stakeholders, and all well-meaning Nigerians to join in advocating for fairness in respect of what people pay for air transport in order to ensure that Kwara State remains open and accessible to all  –Team@orientactualmags.com  Do you have any information you wish to share with us?
