India: 5 Arrested For Assaulting Muslim Students During Taraweeh Prayer At Gurajat Varsity

Hitesh Mewada, Bharat Patel, Shitij Pandey, Jitendra Patel and Sunil Dudhirua ,who are students at the Gujarat University ,Western India,  were arrested and taken into custody by the police on Saturday.

They were arrested after some international students were assaulted at a hostel in the university hostel while observing the Taraweeh prayer.

Team@orientactualmags.com learned that viral videos showed a mob chorusing  Hindu religious slogans while attacking  the students,  vandalizing vehicles and pelting people with stones.

It was  also learned that a heated argument about the location of the prayers led to the physical attack that has  left five students injured.

India’s foreign ministry said  the Gujarat government is already taking ‘strict action’ against the perpetrators.

GS Malik, the police commissioner of Ahmedabad city, told reporters that about two dozen people entered the hostel on Saturday night and objected to the students offering prayers, while asking them to go and observe salat in a mosque.

Tarun Duggal, a top police officer,  also said more people may be arrested soon.

Team@orientactualmags.com learned that three of the injured students have been discharged from the hospital while two others are in a stable condition.

One of the victims, Navid Siddique, a citizen of Afghanistan, said he and other students were observing  the Taraweeh prayer when three people entered the hostel and began questioning them.

‘An argument ensued and they returned with a larger mob armed with stones, iron pipes and they attacked us. They went on a rampage in the hostel assaulting students in their rooms and damaging properties and vehicles’ he said.

About 300 foreign students  from Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and African countries are attending the university.

The international students are in India through scholarships from the federal government-backed Indian Council for Cultural Relations- Team@orientactualmags.com  Do you have any information you wish to share with us?
