Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu on Tuesday made it clear that all he had said he would do during the meeting held with state Resident Electoral Commissioners in Abuja last week Saturday were not empty threats after all.
Team@orientactualmags.com learned Dr Nura Ali , who is the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Sokoto state, has been debarred from getting involved in anything that have to do with the upcoming gubernatorial election in the state.
In a letter dated March 6, 2023, and signed by Secretary to the Commission, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, INEC has directed the administrative Secretary of the commission, Hauwa’u Kangiwa, to take full charge of its office in Sokoto with immediate effect.
‘This is to inform you of the commission’s decision for you (Dr Nura Ali), Resident Electoral Commissioner, Sokoto State, to stay away from the commission’s office in Sokoto State immediately until further notice.
The administrative secretary is directed to take full charge of INEC, Sokoto State office with immediate effect’.
In separate letter, Kangiwa was also asked to liaise with the Supervisory National Commissioner, Professor Muhammad Sani Kala, for further clarifications.
‘Please note that a National Commissioner (Major Gen. A. B. Alkali) and four (4) senior officials (names attached) are deployed to your State to assist you in the preparations and conduct of the forthcoming Governorship and House of Assembly Elections’ the commission submitted.
It will be recalled that Yakubu had during the meeting held with the Resident Electoral commissioners (RECs) in Abuja on Saturday said officials of the commission that were found wanting during the presidential and National Assembly elections held on February 25 would not be allowed to get involved in the governorship and state assembly elections scheduled to hold on March 11.
‘As we approach the governorship and state assembly elections, we must work harder to overcome the challenges experienced in the last election. Nothing else will be acceptable to Nigerians.
All the staff found to be negligent, whether they are regular or ad hoc officials, including collation and returning officers (ROs), must not be involved in the upcoming elections.
RECs must also immediately initiate disciplinary action where prima facie evidence of wrongdoing has been established’ Yakubu had submitted- Team@orientactualmags.com
