Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, is the haven of Arabic and Islamic scholars and it also has its own powerful family dynasties.
These families weren’t overnight successes; their progenitors actually built strong and solid foundations.
Those who descended from these progenitors are endowed with the combined gift of ascribed and achieved status, put mildly; their paths in life have been strewn with all the beautiful roses of earthly adventures.
A fulfilled life is however not all about being born with a silver spoon in one’s mouth, some among these people though found a life of fulfillment, self-actualization and meanings as young men and women; they did not rest on their oars and did not relent in working towards achieving success in their endeavours.
They are household names in Ilorin, and the families in question have produced not just one but many prominent personalities spread and well-positioned in high places who have made indelible marks on the sands of time.

The Saraki Family

The patriarch of the family, late Dr. Olusola Saraki, who was the Waziri of Ilorin, enjoyed exclusive control of the direction of politics in the state for close to four decades.
The London-trained medical doctor, a giant tree in the forest of politics, was the undisputed political lord of Kwara State. For pluses, he had to his credit, the record of having a dominant say in who became the Executive Governor of the state until 2011.
Those who dared him experienced fatal political results, and to prove this, he had two successful cases under his sleeves; the Lawal and Attah scenarios of 1983 and 2003.
He was the Senate Leader during the second republic.
Dr Abubakr Bukola Saraki
He is the first son and the eldest of Dr. Olusola Saraki’s children. Dr Bukola, was in charge of the family’s business until he ventured into politics in 2002.
He served as governor of Kwara State from 2003 to 2011 and also represented Kwara Central in the senate between 2011 and 2019.
Dr Bukola Saraki served as President of the Senate between 2015 and 2019.

He was the 9th Emir of Ilorin and the 2nd longest serving Emir of Ilorin.
He died in 1992 after spending 33 years on the throne.

He was the 4th person to serve as Chief Judge of the Federal High Court.
He died in 2010 at the age of 76.
Alhaji Kale Belgore
He is an architect and a prominent politician in Kwara State.
Architect Kale was based in Kaduna before relocating to Ilorin during the 2003 electioneering campaign. He was the chairman of the Bukola Saraki’s Mandate group and he later got appointed as Commissioner for Lands and Housing.
The then Governor Bukola Saraki in September 2004, carried out a minor cabinet reshuffle and made two commissioners; Alhaji Kale Belgore and Hon Bisi Oloruntoba Special Advisers.
Architect Kale Belgore left the cabinet about four months later.
He also served as Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq’s Counselor during his first term.

He was the Kwara State ACN gubernatorial candidate in the 2011 gubernatorial election.

An architect, she was the Permanent Secretary, Kwara State Ministry of Works and Transport before getting appointed as minister by the then President Olusegun Obasanjo during which she served as Minister of State for Education and later, Minister of State for Health.
She was appointed as Minister of Environment and Housing by late President Umaru Yar’Adua on July 26, 2007.
