Influential Families That Control Ilorin…What You Need To Know About Them

Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, is the haven of Arabic and Islamic scholars and it also has its own powerful family dynasties.

 These families weren’t overnight successes; their progenitors actually built strong and solid foundations.

 Those who descended from these progenitors are endowed with the combined gift of ascribed and achieved status, put mildly; their paths in life have been strewn with all the beautiful roses of earthly adventures.

A fulfilled life is however not all about being born with a silver spoon in one’s mouth, some among these people though found a life of fulfillment, self-actualization and meanings as young men and women; they did not rest on their oars and did not relent in working towards achieving success in their endeavours.

They are household names in Ilorin, and the families in question have produced not just one but many prominent personalities spread and well-positioned in high places who have made indelible marks on the sands of time. 

In this Part One Edition, Team@orientactualmags.com gives insight into the families that have seemingly become somewhat of dynasties in Ilorin.

They are from Adeta area of Ilorin.

 He is a successful contractor and his name opens door anywhere in the country. The Ilorin-born Civil Engineer owns Yolas consult, which is into civil engineering and road construction. He is the Zanna of Ilorin.

A retired military officer, he was the Chief Imam of the Nigerian Army before his retirement.

He was a lecturer at the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin   and also served as Chairman, Kwara State Pilgrims Board.

He was  the founder of Sultanat Islamic Foundation, Adewole, Ilorin . He died in 2014.

Sheikh Abdulkadir Adisa Kamaldeen

Sheikh Mustapha Kamaldeen and Sheikh Abdulkadir Waliyulah Kamaldeen are also among the children of late Sheikh Muhammad Kamaldeen who are Islamic scholars.

The Saraki Family

  They are from Ile-Agoro,  Agbaji  Quarters , Ilorin .  It is an important political family.

The patriarch of the family, late Dr.  Olusola  Saraki, who was the Waziri of Ilorin, enjoyed exclusive control of the direction of politics in the state for close to four decades.

    The London-trained  medical  doctor,  a  giant  tree  in  the  forest  of  politics, was  the  undisputed  political  lord  of  Kwara  State.  For pluses, he had to his  credit,  the  record  of  having  a  dominant  say  in  who  became  the  Executive  Governor  of  the    state until 2011.

Those  who  dared  him   experienced  fatal  political  results,  and  to  prove  this,  he  had  two  successful  cases  under  his  sleeves; the  Lawal  and  Attah  scenarios of 1983 and 2003.

He was the Senate Leader during the second republic.

Dr Abubakr Bukola Saraki

He is the first son and the eldest of Dr. Olusola  Saraki’s children.  Dr Bukola, was in charge of the family’s business until he ventured into politics in 2002.

 He served as governor of  Kwara  State  from 2003 to 2011 and also represented Kwara Central in the senate between 2011 and 2019.

Dr Bukola Saraki served as President of the Senate between 2015 and 2019.

 Like his father, he first held the title of Turaki of Ilorin before getting elevated to Waziri of Ilorin.

She is the first daughter of a business mogul, Otunba Adekunle Ojora.

The barrister –at- law , who is the wife of Dr Bukola Saraki, is the founder of the WellBeing Foundation.

Gbemisola Saraki

She is the Amazon of the Saraki political family; she was a member of the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2003, she later moved to the upper chamber of the national assembly as representative of the Kwara Central Senatorial District.

She represented Kwara Central in the senate between 2003 and 2011.

She is also the daughter of late Dr Olusola Saraki.

He is also the son of “Baba Oloye” Dr. Olusola Saraki.

Said to be greatly apolitical, he is a fun- loving Big Boy, who lives big and among his close friends is the son of former United Nations scribe, Kofi Annan.

He is one of the sons of Baba Oloye’s younger brother; and he served as former governor Abdulfatah Ahmed’s Special Assistant on Local Government Affairs.

They are from Alkali Ikokoro family of  Oke-Aluko, Ilorin , members of the family have registered strong presence in the judiciary, both at the state and the federal levels.

Justice Saidu Kawu

He was the Chief Judge of Kwara State and he had under his belt, a special achievement-the first Ilorin indigene to become a justice of the Supreme Court.

He is also a jurist of note; he is the son of Justice Saidu Kawu and he also served as   Chief Judge of Kwara State.

He was a prominent businessman and industrialist.

He is a medical doctor and a politician.

 Abdulrazaq Family

It is one of the popular political families in Ilorin. The family has also recorded ‘unique’ achievements in the legal profession.

Alhaji AGF Abdulrazaq

The patriarch of the Abdulrazaq family, he was the first lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria from the defunct Northern region. He was the founder and proprietor of Ilorin College, now Government High School, Adeta Ilorin.

He was the Nigerian Ambassador to the Republic of Ivory Coast from 1962 to 1964 and he was also a member of the Federal Parliament from 1964 to 1966 and the Minister of State for Transport.

He is the governor of Kwara State and the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum.

He holds the prestigious title of Sardauna of Ilorin

Dr Alimi AbdulRazaq

He is the first indigene of Ilorin to earn a PhD in Law. The Mutawali of Ilorin Emirate, an egghead and a politician, was also the Kwara State PDP gubernatorial candidate in the 1999 governorship election.

 Khairat Gwadabe

She is the daughter of Alhaji A.G.F.  Abdulrazaq and she represented Federal Capital Territory in the Senate between 1999 and 2003..

She is also the daughter of Alhaji AGF Abdulrazaq. She got married to former governor Mohammed Lawal in the early days of his administration.

Baba Razaq

He is the youngest son of late Alhaji AGF AbdulRazaq.

Isiaka Abdulrazaq

Very popular and well liked by Ilorin ‘big boys’, he was at different times a top official of the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) and NNPC.

Alhaji Mumini Adebayo AbdulRazaq

He was the 4th indigene of Ilorin to become a lawyer. He died in 1972.

Interestingly, his son, Professor Muhammad Taofeeq Abdulrazaq, is the first indigene of Ilorin to become a Professor of Law.

Other prominent members of the Abdulrazaq family include Dr Fatimah Abdulrazaq of the Kwara State High Court, Alhaji Mukaila Abdulrazaq, a TCN official, and Dr Salahudeen Funsho Abdulrazaq.

Gambari Royal Family

His Eminence, Alhaji Sulu Gambari

He was the 9th Emir of Ilorin and the 2nd longest serving Emir of Ilorin.

He died in 1992 after spending 33 years on the throne.

His Eminence, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu Gambari

Mai Martaba, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu Gambari, is the 11th Emir of Ilorin and he ascended the throne on the 11th of the 11th month of the year (November) in 1995.

He was a Judge of the Federal High Court before ascending the throne.

He is the Chairman, Kwara State Council of Chiefs.

Prof. Ibrahim Gambari

He is a man of international status. He was the Nigerian Representative in the United Nations for years and also served as former president Muhammadu Buhari’s Chief of Staff.

Alhaji Abubakr Bature Gambari

He is the son of the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu Gambari.

 The amiable maritime lawyer, who is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, is the Ciroma of Ilorin.

Fatima Gambari

She is the daughter of the Emir of Ilorin and she is a legal practitioner.

Dr Sulaiman Gambari

He is a medical practitioner; and he has a big hospital in Center Igboro area.

Hajia Bilikis Gambari

Businesswoman- turned politician, she  is the Amazon of the Gambari family.

Hajia Bilikis Gambari was the Kwara Central Action Congress senate candidate in the 2007 General Election.  Princess Bilikis, whose mother is also a princess from Okenne, was one of the prominent faces in the opposition during the Bukola Saraki administration.

Mustapha Family

The patriarch of the family, Alhaji Shehu Usman Mustapha served as Commissioner for Finance in the old Kwara State during the second Republic.

Alhaji Shehu Usman Mustapha ,a nonagenarian, is the Wali of Ilorin.

Hon Moshood Mustapha

He is the son of Alhaji Shehu Usman Mustapha.

Hon Moshood Mustapha, who is the Wakinlin of Ilorin, at different times, served as Special Adviser on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Commissioner for Agriculture, and Kwara State Amiru-li- hajj during the Bukola Saraki administration while he also represented Asa/Ilorin West in the House of Representatives between 2011 and 2015.

Mallam Lukman Mustapha

He is the Chairman, Board of Trustees of Sobi101.9fm. He is the Baradeen of Okuta.

Alhaji AbdulHakeem Mustapha

He is a top legal practitioner and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

Belgore Family

The Belgore family of Isale Ajanaku area of Ilorin, is one of the few families in the country that have very strong presence in the nation’s  Judicial arm of Government.

The family has not only recorded rare feat of producing the Chief Judicial Officer of the nation but has equally produced others that have also showed readiness to pursue careers in the judiciary

Their progenitors were respected Islamic clerics and they include Sheikh Muhammad Ahmad Belgore who died in 1913, Sheikh Mahmud Belgore, Sheikh Yusuf Belgore and Sheikh Muhammad Belgore.

Justice Alfa Moddibo Begore

He is a very popular and well-respected jurist.  A former Chief Justice of Nigeria, he is a prominent figure in the country.

Engineer Kola Belgore

He is a socialite, a philanthropist and a businessman. He has served as chairman of many financial institutions including the defunct Trade Bank and Afribank. He is the Jarma of Ilorin.

Justice Babatunde Mahmud Belgore

He was the 4th person to serve as Chief Judge of the Federal High Court.

He died in 2010 at the age of 76.

Alhaji Kale Belgore

He is an architect and a prominent politician in Kwara State.

Architect Kale was based in Kaduna before relocating to Ilorin during the 2003 electioneering campaign. He was the chairman of the Bukola Saraki’s Mandate group and he later got appointed as  Commissioner for Lands and Housing.

The then Governor Bukola Saraki  in September 2004, carried out a minor cabinet reshuffle and made two commissioners; Alhaji Kale Belgore and  Hon Bisi Oloruntoba Special Advisers.

Architect Kale Belgore left the cabinet  about four months later.

He also served as Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq’s Counselor during his first term.

Dr Shuaib Belgore

He is the son of Justice Alfa Belgore.  Dr Shuaib Mohammed Lamido Belgore  is the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

Dele Belgore

Alhaji Muhammad Dele Belgore aka MDB,  is a legal practitioner and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).  He is the son of late Justice Babatunde Mahmud Belgore.

He was the Kwara State ACN gubernatorial candidate in the 2011 gubernatorial election.

Other Big Boys in the family include Alhaji Ibrahim Dasuki Belgore, Engineer Saad Belgore, an oil dealer, and Alhaji Isiaka Ola Belgore, who is the CEO of Utica Capital Ltd.

Members of the Abdulraheem family are from Ile Kutu in Masingba area of Ilorin

The Professor of English was a lecturer at the Faculty of Arts, Bayero University, Kano, before his appointment as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin in 1997.

He was the first indigene of Ilorin to serve as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin.

He had at different times served as Chairman of the Governing Council of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Chairman, Federal Character Commission and he is currently the Chairman of the Governing Councils of Kwara State University of Education (KWSUED) , Ilorin,  Federal University Dutse, Jigawa State, and the Muhammad Kamaldeen University, Ilorin.

He is the Talba of Ilorin.

Mahmud Abdulraheem

Alhaji Mahmud  Abdulraheem , who holds a doctorate degree in Mass Communication, is also a lawyer.

He served as General Manager, Radio Kwara and Kwara State Television during the Bukola Saraki administration.

 Ahmed Family

They are from Ile Abojumeji Daniyan royal family.

The patriarch of the family, Alhaji Ahmed, who retired as a Permanent Secretary in Kano State, was also the Daudu of Ile Abojumeji before his death a few years ago.

Hajia Halimah Tayo Alao

An architect, she was the Permanent Secretary, Kwara State Ministry of Works and Transport before getting appointed as minister by the then President Olusegun Obasanjo during which she served as Minister of State for Education and later, Minister of State for Health.

She was appointed as Minister of Environment and Housing by late President Umaru Yar’Adua on July 26, 2007.

Barrister Salisu Ahmed

He is a prominent golfer and a successful legal practitioner.

Dr Bola Ahmed

He is the Chief Medical Director of Kwara State University Teaching Hospital, Ilorin.

Lawal Family

Mohammed Alabi Lawal

He was a retired Admiral ,who served as Military Governor of Ogun State and later served as Executive Governor of Kwara State between 1999 and 2003.

Hon Arinola Lawal

She is the daughter of late Admiral Mohammed Lawal and she is a member of the state house of assembly.

She had earlier served as Commissioner for Water Resources during the first term of Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq.

Alhaji Hakeem Lawal

He is a businessman and a politician.

He was the SDP gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 Kwara State gubernatorial election.

Adisa Family

The patriarch of the family, late General Abdulkarim Adisa served as Military Governor of old Oyo State and he was also the Minister for Works during the military administration headed by late General Sani Abacha.

He was until his death in 2005 one of the influential Ilorin indigenes.

Bidemi Adisa

He is the eldest son of  the late General Adisa. He is a businessman.
