Intraparty Power Struggle In NNPP Comes Into The Open As BoT Suspends Kwankwaso, NWC Members

The intraparty power struggle in one of the leading opposition parties in the country, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), was brought to light on Tuesday .

The party’s  Board of Trustees (BoT) has announced the suspension of   Alhaji Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso from the party citing  anti-party activities.

Alhaji Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso  , a former minister , and a one-time governor of Kano state,  stood as the party’s candidate in the presidential election held on  February 25 this year.

Team@orientactualmags.com  learned that  the intraparty conflict in the party may not be unconnected with Kwankwaso’s plans to relaunch his presidential bid ahead of the next general election.

The BoT  has also suspended the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party while naming Dr Agbo Major as acting National Chairman and Mr Ogini Olaposi as acting National Secretary.   18 other party members were also named as replacements for the sacked NWC members.

Team@orientactualmags.com learned that members of the party joined the BoT members at the special general assembly held at the Rockview Hotels , Apapa on Tuesday.

The  NWC had on Thursday, August 24, announced the suspension of the founder of the party, Dr Boniface Aniebonam and the National Publicity Secretary, Agbo Major.

Secretary of the BoT, Babayo Muhammed Abdulahi  told journalists  on Tuesday that   Kwankwaso has been accused of hobnobbing with President Bola Tinubu,  former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and Mr. Peter Obi, without  seeking the consent of the BoT.

Abdullahi also added  that Kwankwaso will no longer get recognized as  NNPP National Leader while asserting that  Dr Boniface Aniebonam’s suspension  was a flagrant gross violation of the party’s constitution.

 Aniebonam had according to him resigned as  BoT chairman while a new BoT Chairman, Dr Chief Tope Aluko was elected with himself as new BoT Secretary, while High Chief Tony Obioha was chosen as spokesman for  the BoT .

Abdulahi said the pre-election Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with Kwankwasia Movement, The National Movement (TNM) and National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) had been rendered invalid by the actions of the NWC.

 ‘The purported suspension of the founder is a flagrant gross violation of the NNPP constitution such that it is tantamount to recklessness and irresponsibility on the part of the incompetent NWC.

The BoT decided that material evidence in the public sector affirmed that Kwankwaso was involved in anti-party activities in various meetings, suggest political discussions with the President, Atiku and Obi without authorization from the board.

 This has earned him six months suspension pending the outcome of investigation by the Disciplinary Committee.

The BOT insisted that the avoidable violation of MoU between NNPP on the one part and Kwankwasia, TNM and NAGAFF on the other has no other choice than to withdraw from the partnership.

It is therefore to state clearly that the MOU have been rendered invalid’ he said.

Also speaking, the acting chairman said his team would hit the ground running by healing the wounds created by the suspended NWC members.

 ‘We don’t intend to shut anybody out or censor anybody, but we want to ensure that we remain on track and maintain our people- oriented ideology’ he said-Team@orientactualmags.com
