Kwara state Government on Saturday announced the closure of the Mandate Market, Adewole , Ilorin noting that traders , shop owners and those visiting the market to purchase goods would however be allowed to return there for the usual activities on Monday, March 27 2023.
‘The market will be re-opened on Monday from 8a.m’ Commissioner for Business, Innovation and Technology, Mallam Ibrahim Akaje, disclosed in a statement made available to Team@orientactualmags.com on Saturday evening.
‘Even though the government has had the market returned to a state of normalcy after the initial tension and opportunistic attacks on people’s properties by hoodlums, the government hereby directs temporary closure of the market for security reasons pending the resolution of some issues that had triggered the disturbances.
The government commends the prompt response of the security agencies to the distress calls. We warn against further trouble from any quarters. The market and activities of everyone involved therein are regulated by laws, which must be respected by all.
The market will be reopened on Monday while efforts have begun to resolve all pending issues’ the statement added.
It will be recalled that suspected burglars had clashed with the police at the market earlier on Saturday, and the incident had reportedly left scores of people injured.
This was obviously recorded because there was a stampede.
Team@orientactualmags.com had gathered that some shop owners at the market had complained to security agencies that some petty traders, guards, cleaners and load carriers, who reside in the market, usually break into shops at the market in the night unhindered.
Policemen at the market police post had carried out a raid and arrested some suspects following complaints by some victims of burglary incidents.
It was further learned that some of the suspects arrested on suspicion of being lock pickers were young people from the northern part of the country and their kinsmen had insisted that they must be released ,a situation that degenerated into fracas- Team@orientactualmags.com
