Kwara Poly ,3 Companies Sign MoU  To Promote Skill Acquisition, Make Students Become Employers Of Labour

The Kwara state Polytechnic , Ilorin , has signed Memoranda of Understanding with three indigenous industrial companies to promote skill acquisition and make students at the polytechnic acquire practical skills that will make  them become self -sufficient   and employers of labour after leaving the institution.

One of the  three companies; Prototype Engineering Development Institute, Ilesha, Federal Institute of Industrial Research (FIIRO), Oshodi and Mantrac CAT, Ikeja, Lagos will also teach students at the polytechnic  how to operate and maintain heavy equipment used in the oil sector, marine sector, among others.

The Rector, Engineer Abdul Jimoh Mohammed, who disclosed this during the press conference he presided over at the Conference Hall of the polytechnic  on Tuesday,  said necessary steps had also been taken with regard to addressing the menace of encroachment on the land belonging to the institution.

The press conference  which was attended by Team@orientactualmags.com was a part of a series of activities for the institution’s 28th convocation ceremony.

Engineer Abdul Jimoh Mohammed lamented  that 41 per cent of  the land  belonging to the polytechnic  had  recorded  encroachment.

‘The Polytechnic is currently occupying 6% of its land mass. 41% of the entire land mass has been encroached in such a way that it has enveloped the 6%.

The remaining 53% is not accessible because the Polytechnic will have to pass through the encroached portion before it can access the virgin land’  he said.

Counter steps had according to him been taken  by locating  some projects in areas considered  prone to  encroachment .

He added  that the institution  was  also collaborating with the  Ministry of Tertiary Education to tackle encroachment noting that a committee had since been set up for this purpose by   the state government.

The Rector also said necessary steps had been taken to enforce discipline at the institution  adding  that  eight among the staff were sacked  for getting involved in  certificate racketeering,  while some were demoted as a result of committing one offence or the other.

Kwarapoly  , he noted, offers 56  courses across disciplines  including  Nutrition Science, Library Science

Mechatronics and Food Science and Technology that were recently added.

The Rector also disclosed that 62 among the 7, 781 graduating students ,   got  distinction in the HND category while  56 students had distinction in the OND category.

Evangelist James Ogunlakin, who attended the press conference , submitted that the Alumni association of the institution  had also taken steps to support the efforts  of the polytechnic to tackle encroachment.

Ogunlakin , who is the Vice President of the Alumni association, noted that such  steps will yield positive results before the end of year- Team@orientactualmags.com
