The Rector, Kwara state Polytechnic, Ilorin, Engineer Dr. Addul Jimoh Mohammed, has urged those who have just become alumni of the Polytechnic to be ‘good ambassadors’ of the institution and ensure that they remain responsible citizens .
Team@orientactualmags.com learned that Engineer Mohammed said this on Thursday while giving his speech during the Convocation Ceremony held at the institution for the 2022/2023 academic session .
A total of 8,350 people graduated from the polytechnic during its 29th convocation ceremony on Thursday.
5,350 among the graduands received Higher National Diploma (HND) , the remaining 3,000 graduands earned Ordinary National Diploma (OND) while 102 among them graduated with distinction.
Jimoh Barakat Omowunmi , HND Mechanical Engineering was the Overall Best National Diploma student , HND category, while Maruf Ibrahim got that of the ND category.
‘You have laboured hard, toiled tirelessly and burnt the candle at both ends and these have culminated in this joyous event. No doubt, your dreams have been fulfilled and you have become the prides and glories of your parents and guardians. Therefore, you must always remember that the certificates in your possession are very precious; they are confirmations that you have proved yourselves worthy in character and learning’ Engineer Dr. Addul Jimoh Mohammed, said.
He also commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for creating an enabling environment for the management of the institution to carry out its duties and fulfill its obligations effectively.
The Rector had earlier on Wednesday disclosed that a 33KV transformer has been procured by the polytechnic which will step up voltage from power plants, boost electricity supply and improve learning environment.
‘The project which was undertaken by the management will ensure regular power supply to the polytechnic, Apata-Yakuba, Oyun, Oke-Oyi and Oke-Ose communities in Moro and Ilorin East local governments, other state and federal government agencies that will also benefit from the institution’s largesse are the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital( UITH ), Kwara state Television Authority, Radio Kwara, the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation(NNPCL), Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), and the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON)’ he had submitted.
The Renovated old IOT lecture Hall, Laboratories/workshop and office projects were also inaugurated on Thursday..
Jimoh listed the challenges the institution has faced to include funding and illegal occupation of land belonging to the polytechnic land.
He has urged the government to make construction of perimeter fence at the polytechnic a priority.
Construction of a perimeter fence at the institution is according to him long- overdue as it will check ‘intruders’ and enhance security while submitting that everything belonging to the polytechnic is currently valued at 26 billion naira and nothing should therefore be spared when it comes to protecting such an asset.
The Commissioner For Tertiary Education, Dr. Mary Ronke Arinde ,who commended the graduands as well as their parents and guardians for their resilience, urged the graduands to get ready to soar in a highly competitive world.
‘I urge you to tap from the abundant entrepreneurial skills gained at the polytechnic, to launch yourselves into self-reliance. This, will not only be to your advantage, but will go a long way to complement the government’s policies towards taking Nigeria away from a mono-economy. In addition, for you to get ahead in life, volunteer to do very sound and valuable venture that no one else cares to do, and do it better for the benefits of all.
Accept responsibilities and shun criminal tendencies, this will make you stand out among equals and remain appreciated by others. You should cultivate the habit of honesty, transparency and shun discrimination along ethnic, religious, cultural and racial lines, which today are part of Nigeria’s troubling challenges’ she said
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who was represented by his Chief of Staff , Prince Abdulkadir Aliyu Mahe, commended the management of the polytechnic for breaking new ground in infrastructural development, promising that the government would continue to support the polytechnic in respect of its goals.
