Kwara University Of Education: CUTI Suspends Planned Protest, Urges Fidelity To ‘Transmutation’

Kwara University Of Education: CUTI Suspends Planned Protest, Urges Fidelity To ‘Transmutation’

Non-teaching staff of Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin under the umbrella of the Committee of Unions in Tertiary Institutions (CUTI) suspended its planned protest on Monday.

Members of the CUTI held a congress at the College of Education on Monday during which they deliberated on matters that have become sources of worry for them and they later came up with resolutions.

The non-teaching staff noted that certain recent developments had made them suffer from ergophobia which therefore necessitated the decision to call for protest in order to express strong disagreement and let the state government know what they are worried about .

They cited the changes in the choice of words with respect to their relationship with the Kwara State University of Education (KWASUED), Ilorin, which had moved from ‘transmutation, to ‘establishment’ and later ‘co-existence’.

The non-teaching staff also said the letter of approval for a contract by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education stating that 14 structures at the college of education including clinic and library would be renovated and handed over to the new university was seen as a way of saying that their services are no longer needed.

Noting that it is no longer seen as a symbiotic relationship but a parasitic relationship, the CUTI members added that this development had given birth to fear of job loss.

While it was noted that the Commissioner for Tertiary Education had assured them that there will be no job loss and that the university will move to its permanent site later, the CUTI members however demanded for fidelity to ‘transmutation’ as promised by Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq at the start of the university.

There were contributions from attendees of the congress including Mr Fatahi Rahman, Mr Taofeek Alfanla, Mr Zubair Abubakar and Mr Julius Popoola.

Comrade Olayinka Magobon, whose contribution eventually provided a clear path, submitted that no staff of the College of Education, Ilorin, will not show appreciation to the governor for ‘clearing’ inherited unpaid salary and ensuring regular payment of salary while also making them enjoy other things.

He later moved a motion calling for the suspension of the planned protest and urging the governor to ensure fidelity to ‘transmutation’ like it was done in Tai Solarin University and other new institutions while Mr Emmanuel Sunday Owolabi seconded the motion.

The motion was supported by those who attended the congress.

Comrade Musa Mustapha, who is the Chairman of CUTI, told Team@orientactualmags.com after the congress that there is a need for the state government to clear the air and take necessary measures to allay the college workers’ fears while urging members of staff of the institution to shun the idea of promoting interests different from the ‘common goal’ as this can confuse those in positions of authority and make them take wrong decisions-Team@orientactualmags.com  Do you have any information you wish to share with us?
