Members of the public can now have their scrap vehicles converted to electric cars at the Kwara state University, KWASU, Malete, Kwara state as the engineering team at the institution’s Centre for Sustainable Energy , have successfully done this in respect of a car and had since handed it over to the Transport division at the university.
The engineers, including Professor Kenneth Adeyemi and Engineer AbdulAzeez , who are currently working on three other vehicles including a hilux car , noted that when completed, the electric vehicles would be for the use of the school clinic and the security department.
The car that was converted to electric vehicle had since been taken to the Government House, Ilorin, the Kwara state Ministry of Business, Innovation and Technology and the Ministry of Energy.
Acting Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh disclosed this during the press conference he presided over in Malete on Tuesday, which was attended by journalists including Team@orientactualmags.com .
It was held as part of the activities and programmes for the institution’s 10th and 11th Convocation Ceremonies.
Recall that oil marketers had raised the pump price of petrol in the country sequel to the removal of petrol subsidy in May this year.
A petrol vehicle that is available in either manual or automatic transmission carbon uses a spark-ignited internal combustion engine, petrol is injected into the combustion chamber and combined with air while the air/fuel mixture is ignited by a spark from the spark plug, however, an electric car is powered by an electric motor that draws electricity from a battery and it can be charged from an external source.
The Kwara state University, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh noted , has also inaugurated a plastic recycling plant at the Centre for Entrepreneurship, adding that with this initiative, ‘tons of plastic waste that would have polluted our environment are currently being converted to pavement stones’.
He also disclosed that both the graduates of the 2021/2022 academic session and the 2022/2023 academic session would be receiving their First degrees, Postgraduate degrees and Diplomas on December 16,2023,
A total of 16,315 students including a physically challenged person, would be graduating from the university while 183 among those in the first degree category would be graduating with first class honours.
The 10th and 11th Convocation Ceremonies, according to the VC, started with the press conference he has presided over on Tuesday followed by an exhibition and Book Fair and a football match between teaching and non-teaching staff of the university .
There will also be a convocation play titled ‘Madam Tinubu’ at the main auditorium of the university on Wednesday , December 13, 2023, while a major highlight of the 10th and 11th Convocation ceremonies is the Convocation Lecture that would be delivered by Professor Ishaq Oloyede , the Registrar and Chief Executive of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Thursday , December 14, 2023, titled ‘Learning, Relearning and Unlearning : Prerequisites of The Digital Age’.
Three major infrastructure projects provided by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFUND,; the senate building, Centre for Sustainable Energy Building and the Engineering Workshop Complex will be inaugurated by the Executive Secretary of the agency, Architect Sunny Echonu on the same day.
Award of degrees will hold on December 16, 2023, while a convocation luncheon would be held on the same day during which some among the staff of the university would be honoured with awards including Best Researcher Award and Best Non-teaching Staff Award.

The Acting VC also noted that the university had in 2021 gotten the go-ahead from the National Universities Commission, NUC, to offer 24 new courses including medicine and surgery , food engineering, Aquaculture and fisheries management while adding that a lot has happened at the institution since the last convocation press conference that was held in 2021.

He also submitted that the university, which was established in 2009, has maintained the tradition of a stable academic calendar and provided an enabling learning and work environment, while listing the challenges the institution has faced to include encroachment on its land and he has urged the state government to set up a Review Committee to ascertain the amount of land allocated to the university-Team@orientactualmags.com
